Hi everyone,

I'm pregnant with my first and I've had two ultrasound scans so far at approx 6 and 9 weeks. My next appointment will be at 13 weeks when my doctor said I will have another scan and also blood and urine tests.

I don't know much about antenatal care, but in the UK the tests seem to done at around 10 weeks, so I'm confused why it is different here. When I went for my last scan I was just so relieved that everything was ok that i didn't question my doctor about it,

Can anyone share their experience? I've been keeping my good news quiet so far so I can't really ask advice from friends etc.

Thanks for your help

PS Is anyone else due in August? There doesn't seem to be an August thread yet.

eta just realised my title should say no testing until 13 weeks

Congratulations! They do not advise on what to eat because every culture is differnet and have different diets etc. Personally, I eat everything I normally eat. The only thing I avoid is seafood from somewhere new - for exapmlpe, I wont eat seafood at a brunch or a new place I dine at, just in case As for exercise, you can do what you normally do, but you will probably be a bit tired for the first trimester and will slow down anyway The urine tests are for infection, bacterias, PH level etc. Blood tests are for blood group, glucose level, Thyroid, Hep B, HIV, Toxoplasma, Rubella etc My insurance covers NT scans

PS TOWIS - good luck with your scan. I find them quite nerve wracking!

Thanks for all the advice ladies :-) and congratulations TOWIS. I'm due mid August but no official date yet. I will email my doctor and find out exactly what they will be testing for. Kiwispiers, I think that was what I had read about the combined scan and blood test which set some alarm bells ringing. Also find it a bit weird that my doctor hasn't given me any advice on what not to eat, what exercise to do or avoid etc! Guess that's what NHS website is for.......

If you want the combined test ( bloods and nuchal) which is more accurate then the bloods should ideally be done earlier than 13 weeks, from memory at around 11 weeks? So you might want to look into that

Congratulations! I'm due late august (I think...we've not had dating yet). I've had one ultrasound and going for another in a week and a half but after that will hold off until I'm 12 weeks and that's when the tests begin I think... Mollydxb, I'm just wondering why the nuchal fold transclucency scan is needed here, just I understood that it's used so people can make an informed decision about continuing the pregnancy if the foetus is affected but that's not an option here is it? Or did I completely misunderstand the function of it? You don't have to have the NT scan if you don't want to. I guess that's why it isn't covered on insurance. There are many that would not continue with a pregnancy if they found out at this stage the child would be a down's baby. Sad but a fact

Remember this is not the NHS - everything is done to get you to pay more money. That is why you will have appointments every 4 weeks, including scans, and everyone is encouraged to have the NT scan. 12-13 weeks is the normal time to have tests done on the NHS as well, you must have just been lucky getting them earlier in your previous pregnancy. TOWIS - it's not only for the continuation of the pregnancy but to give the parents time to get used to the idea etc

Congratulatons! They will do a Nuchal Fold Translucency scan when you go at 13 weeks, this is for the early detection of Down's Syndrome. Nothing to worry about. They can only do this by ultrasound between 11-14 weeks so you are well within the time frame. If you have any doubts why don't you check with the clinic/hospital to make sure they will be doing one. They'll be doing a scan anyway so it won't make any difference even if they don't have you down for an NT scan. If you have insurance and have maternity covered you may find that the NT scan isn't covered on your insurance. I have very good cover with bupa but for some reason the NT scans are not covered and they are not cheap. My last pregnancy I was charged 2000Dhs and this one 1200Dhs. Just thought I'd mention it. All the best
