Hi Ladies

DD will soon be moving onto solids. Her doc gave us the ok as she suffers from silent reflux and has not had a good experience with formula either.

I'd be interested to hear from other mums with reflux babies as to their experiences. The doc suggested we should start with banana and baby cereal.

I've got a few weeks to prepare and want to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible!!

TIA!

Oh and if you want to use bought pre-made foods, you can open the sachet/jar and then portion the contents into ice cube trays then freeze and bag, just as you would with homemade puree so you can defrost little amounts a time without wasting a whole jar. I make my own rice pudding (with egg and cows milk) and freeze that into portions a silicone muffin tin, since I avoid wheat and oats, I also cook millet and quinoa(soak the quinoa overnight first) which I used to cook then put in the blender to make into a sort of porridge when he was younger. Other tips, if you are going the puree route, invest in a food processor AND a blender. Things like peas puree much better if you put them into ice cold water (when still hot from being cooked) and then use the blender, but meats etc are better in the food processor. DS has always had ginger, garlic and onion as well as herbs and spices (but not salt or chilli) in his food from day one. If your LO turns her head, still has the tongue thrust or just isn't keen then she's not ready and you should wait a little longer.

Not sure how old your LO is but I should also add, DS's reflux started to get significantly better from about the 4 month mark, and we introduced solids at 6.5 months. If I had started solids earlier, I would have mistakenly thought they were the reason for him getting better.

I found solids definitely worsened the reflux (although he had stopped vomiting and it was mostly "silent" by the time we started), the worst have been oats, wheat and dairy(especially yoghurt). I also found that lumpy foods were worse than smooth purees. The best advice I can give is to introduce things one at a time (like one new food given each day for a week) so you can easily pinpoint anything that is causing a problem. Bananas have always been fine, but they need to be very very ripe (the skin should be yellow and covering in brown spots) otherwise starting with cereal and banana could be a recipe for constipation for sure. Pear, peach, plum, apricot, avocado have all gone down well, I introduced meat very early on with no problems. I avoided kiwifruit and berries until DS was one and still don't give citrus at 14 months.
