Hi
I have just had my blood test done and my tsh levels came back extremely high(17) this indicates hypothyroidism which is an under active thyroid. I am know worrying myself sick as I have read that this condition in. Early pregnancy can effect brain development of the baby. They have put me on mess but can't stop thinking its too late and I have damaged the baby. Has anyone had similar experience or advice on this as at the moment just can't get these negative thoughts out of my head. Thanks

Kellyjane - first of all, try not to worry, I know that's a difficult thing to do ;-) I have an underactive thyroid, which was diagnosed long before I got pregnant. Were you underactive before, or has the pregnancy triggered it? Your doctor is doing the right thing in giving you thyroxine (eltroxin is a very good brand of thyroxine, so it's a good choice). The TSH blood test is actually a test of the hormones in the pituitary gland, not the thyroid. If the thyroid is working correctly, the pituitary produces less TSH as it doesn't need to compensate for the thyroid. So the TSH can take a little longer to actually come down, but it doesn't mean that the medication is not starting to work - it starts to work from the day you begin taking it, as it is absorbed by the body and broken down. What was your TSH level? You may need to be a little careful about which Endocrinologist you consult. My doctor insists that my TSH needs to be under 1 for my thyroid to function properly, but some doctors say anything under 5 is fine. My TSH was at 2.5 and I couldn't even go to work, so it is very person specific, but as you are pregnant, my doctor would want your TSH to be just under 1, for you to be on the optimal thyroid dose. If you google endocrinologist on here, there are some threads with good recommendations (my doctor is in the UK, and I prefer to have telephone consultations with him rather than switch to a new one). Please try not to worry, although an underactive thyroid can sometimes cause difficulties in conceiving, it is usually in people who have been undiagnosed for a siginificant amount of time, and it is not caught until after the woman consults about infertility.
