i know ive posted several times on this but im desperate lol! DS will be 6months in a few days. He went from sleeping 7pm-11pm (dreamfeed) to 6.30am. Now hes waking up at 9pm and sometime between 11 and 6. I know hes not hungry as hes feeding very well these days during the day and hes also on 2 x solids a day (will soon raise to 3).

He wakes up and moans and will only stop when carried. The minute hes put back down he starts moaning again. Whats strange is he self settles at 7pm in his cot. He takes 2 naps a day which are usually a struggle - a morning one for about 2hrs and an afternoon one for about 45mins. I cant get him to sleep for longer during the day unfortunately no matter what i do :(

Any thoughts ? is it worth contacting Cecile or anyone know of any other sleep trainer? im back at work and im exhaustedddddd

oh mols- bless you. its so hard but as you said there is nothing wrong with him and i believe its so important for them to settle themselves. if there was something wrong he would have carried on crying when picked up... my DS was so poorly last week that he wouldnt stop crying even when held, so i knew it was something... hope the rest of the night went well x

So today, self settled at 645pm and woke up howling at 8pm. I carry him he falls asleep, I put him down he howls. So have been letting him howl :( and keep rubbing his tummy, leaving room for 3mins, going back in to rub his tummy. Carried a couple of times and he sleeps instantly (one way of telling nothing really wrong a nurse once told me!) Few quite sniffles now on monitor but hopefully quietening down (fingers crossed!!!) soooo hard :(

i knowww - one thing ive learnt since becoming a mum is NEVER JUDGE! its so easy to know what the right thing to do is - but sometimes when you're exhausted - its so easy to take the quicker option (i used to just pull out the boob lol would knock him out in seconds !) but i agree - i think a big part could be that hes overtired at night - but i cant seem to get him to go down for a quick nap at 4ish - no matter what i do - walks/car/bed etc....will try your way tomorrow Mrsg1- heres hoping

i know what you mean, you need your sleep so its easier- im a working mum too i get you :) i would try and give him a shorter nap in the morning and a longer one in the afternoon- see if helps. in theory if he only has 30/45 mins in the morning then he should be tired enough to have a longer nap in afternoon. it might take a few days but worth a try hey? at 6 months my little one would be tired after 2 hours of being awake, so he would get up at 7- go down for a sleep at 9- be up by 10- then go down again at 12...

thanks for your quick responses ladies. he starts off moaning asleep so we put the dummy in etc but it just seems to intensify until hes carried. I keep feeling maybe hes getting used to being carried in the middle of the night - and im just too exhausted to let him cry it out :( I suppose yes, it could be that the teeth should be emerging soon as he is approaching 6months. Its so hard to tell because he has had the symptoms for months (drooling/chewing his finger and everything else in sight lol) have his vaccines coming up will check with his doc. The reason why i give him the long nap in the morning - is because it seems to be the only time he wants a long one - i actually usually end up waking him. You think i should wake him earlier and see if he sleeps later in the afternoon?

when you say moan is he crying? how long do you leave him for before going in? im saying this because my LO used to do the same and as long as he wasnt crying i didnt go in and he would drop off eventually. does he have a dummy? could it be that is coming out? the nap times sounds about right but have you tried to reverse the times? i.e. give him a short nap in the morning and a longer nap in the afternoon? if he is only hving 45 mins in the morning he could be over tired hence the waking... my DS only has 30 mins in the morning (he could sleep for longer but i wake him) then 2-2.5 hours at lunchtime. he is awake from 2.30/3 and bath time is 6, asleep by 6.30 and he goes until 7/7.30. im by no means an expert just speaking from my expereince.

There are a lot more experienced mums on this forum that are bound to be able to give you great advice but i can share why my DD does this from time to time. We always notice her sleep going out of kilter when one of two things is happening - teething; or an upcoming milestone like crawling; walking etc. As soon as the tooth has popped through or she has mastered the milestone she went back to sleeping the whole way through. Is one of these two things happening with your DS?
