Getting around Dubai is simple and easy and that's usually the case, but for people with special needs it keeps getting easier and better.
Home to the world’s tallest building, the world’s largest shopping mall, the world’s fanciest hotels and more – Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and more landmarks always manage to attract worldwide attention.
But Dubai has always tried to have the resident’s best intentions at the forefront of their projects and designs – especially for those people of determination.
Dubai constantly tries to ease the lives of people of determination and provide them with the same amount of rights as any other citizen living in the city.
This can means not having to walk any more than the average person, having special areas to recuperate and rest, having equal opportunities to obtain a job, having specialised parking spots, and being able to engage in sports and activities and more.
And if that’s not enough, here are 4 Dubai projects that are awesome for people of determination in the country.
1. More accessible beaches in Dubai
Beaches in Dubai are fairly simple – you walk, across the pedestrian walkways and you’re near the water within minutes. But as simple as this sounds, getting to the beach isn’t as easy for people with determination.
That’s why the Dubai Municipality installed more blue and white walkways at various beaches across all the emirates to make accessing the beach easier for people of determination and the elderly.
Built to international-recognised standards – the dedicated access allows for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs to easily access the beach water.
These special walkways are already in action at Al Mamzar Creek, Al Mamzar Corniche, Jumeirah 2 & 3 and Umm Suqeim Beach.
2. Extra space in Dubai transportation
From the Dubai Metro, RTA shuttle buses and Dubai taxis – most transportation methods have been designed to accommodate the needs of people of determination.
Adapted taxis for people of determination can be booked in most emirates by calling 04 208 08 08 – and a spacious taxi with a built-in wheelchair escalator helps them inside the car.
The Dubai Metro also has lots of elevators and walkways to ease the use of public transportation.
3. Signs for people of determination all over Dubai
Dubai made a remarkable and considerate move when they changed all their “disabled” signs to write “people of determination” instead.
All over the world, people with special needs are referred to as being disabled – in Dubai, however, it is not alright to do so.
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, made it a point to do so, saying: “Disability is in fact the inability to make progress and achievements. The achievements that people of determination have made in various spheres over the past years are proof that determination and strong will can do the impossible and encourage people to counter challenges and difficult circumstances while firmly achieving their goals.”
And ever since the executive decision to do so – signs for people of determination have popped up all over public areas in the UAE.
4. More employment for people of determination
The UAE has been at the forefront of providing equal and fair job opportunities to Emiratis of determination – ultimately creating laws on the protection and fairness of employment.
Federal Law No. 29 and Dubai Government Law No. 2 of 2014 – both declare that UAE nationals with special needs can and have the right to work in public sectors.
Focusing on the fact that their special needs should not create a barrier for their nomination of a job in the UAE.
