Dental Implants: Your Smile Savers FAQ's

With effective oral hygiene, your teeth are designed to last a lifetime. When they don’t, replacing your missing teeth is essential to preserving your chewing and speaking ability. Whether the loss of a tooth is the result of an injury or gum diseases, dental implants are by far the best option to replace missing teeth.

Here are the answers to some of the questions our patients at Dr. Michael’s Dental Clinic often ask regarding dental implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are substitutes for the roots of missing teeth. An implant is placed into the jaw to serve as an anchor for replacement tooth/teeth or other dental prostheses like crowns, bridges and dentures.

Am I a candidate for implants?

Anyone who has lost a tooth and is in good general and oral health is a good implant candidate. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal (gum) diseases.

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Your periodontist can help you decide on the best form of implant for you after a careful assessment of your dental and medical history.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Because dental implants look, feel and function like your own teeth, your facial structure remains natural. Also, dental implants allow you to speak, eat and smile with ease and confidence.

Dental implants also eliminate the need for partial dentures, removable dentures or fixed bridges. Implants securely anchor your artificial teeth, dentures or bridges, making you feel like you still have your natural teeth.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper oral hygiene, nutrition and routine dental check-ups, your dental implants can last a lifetime.

How long does the whole dental implant process take?

The dental implant process is usually a two-phase procedure. The first phase starts after thorough evaluation and treatment plan. It is the actual placement of the implants into your jaw. The implant is then allowed to heal with the bone jawbone for 3 -6 months while osseointegration (bonding to bone) takes place.

The second phase involves removing the gum tissue which covers the implant and then placing a post into the implant. This is followed by creating and attaching the new tooth/teeth to the implants(s) in your jaw. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or even a complete set of dentures. Your dentist can recommend the best choice for you.

How do I care for my new dental implants?

Treat your implants like your natural teeth. Brush and floss regularly. Remember to go for regular dental appointments. Your "new teeth" require regular check-up by your dentist to ensure that the surrounding gums and bone are healthy, and that the dental restorations attached to your implants are secure and functioning properly.
