Why do people choose to leave their hometown and make the move abroad? For some people, it is the desire to give their family more opportunities and to provide a better life for their children. For others, it may be the fact that they are longing to fulfil a life-long dream of wanting to experience life elsewhere and to see more of the world as a result. Regardless of what your reason may be in wanting to make the move overseas and become an expat, it is always reassuring to hear the success stories of those who moved and had a wonderful and happy life as a result. Sometimes the fear of the unknown can hold us back from reaching our true potential, which is why we have put together a list of some of the most famous expats of the world who went on to achieve great things away from their homeland. You may even be surprised that the following celebrities and famous faces are, in fact, expats!
Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham is considered to be one of the UK’s most famous expats, having lived in both Spain and the US. Her relocation was typically associated with following her footballer husband, but it has to be said that the WAG has balanced her work, family and expat life very well. Victoria has raised her children and managed to carve out a successful career, mainly in fashion, despite her movements and is a fantastic example of how the challenges of relocation are often worth it in the long term.
Colin Firth
Acclaimed and beloved actor Colin Firth was born in Hampshire, England but spent much of his youth overseas. Firth’s parents were British academics who actually grew up in India and moved their own family to other parts of the world including Nigeria and St. Louis. Firth’s collection of experiences most probably helped him to become a better actor as he was exposed to a range of different cultures and people throughout the course of his life.

Julia Gillard
The former Australian politician and Prime Minister is an expat child, having moved from Wales to Australia at the tender age of 5, after she suffered from bronchopneumonia and it was advised that she move to a warmer climate. The move to Australia proved to have been an incredibly rewarding decision both for her health and her career as she is now a strong political figure.
Charlie Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin’s life as an expat was not always an easy one. Charlie was born in London and ended up moving to the States from 1914 until 1953, when he was forced to return to the UK after being faced with accusations that he was a communist (during the Cold War). The motion picture actor was forced to give up his residency in the US due to ‘an unhealthy atmosphere’ in the country at the time. He then went on to live in Vevey, Switzerland.
