If you’re moving to Dubai it is important that you’re aware of the banned drugs that you can't bring into the UAE

The UAE has strict restrictions on banned narcotics and controlled medicines, thus it's important to make sure that any medication you may be taking that you'd like to bring to the UAE is not a banned medicine in Dubai.

The Pharmacy Law No. 4 of 1983 and the Narcotics Law No. 14 of 1995, cautions people entering the UAE with unauthorised medicines that may be easily available in your country of origin. This is due to the fact that controlled medicines can only be imported into the UAE through hospitals and large community pharmacies.

What medications can I take to Dubai?

There are some exceptions and special regulations for different circumstances, and you can find out more about bringing medicines into the UAE with our guide.

If you are travelling with medication to Dubai or UAE

If you’re travelling with controlled medicines that are strictly for personal use then you will also have to carry a valid medical prescription from the country of origin. If the original prescription is not available, then you will need to carry an attested prescription instead.

If you’re staying in the UAE then an additional authenticated certificate or permit from the relevant health authority is also needed.

How to bring controlled medicines into the UAE?

If you're looking to bring controlled medicines into the UAE, you must have an approved prescription from your doctor.

Narcotic medicines are allowed into Abu Dhabi if it's been prescribed by a physician licensed by HAAD for an in-patient. The prescription must be written on an approved narcotic prescription form. Sometimes, exceptions will be considered following a request from a medical director.

Prescribed psychotropic medicines are allowed in Abu Dhabi for out-patients from an HAAD-licensed doctor. According to the UAE government's website, there are certain requirements for psychotropics known as CDa, previously known as 'Registered Prescription (RP)' or 'Group 4' drugs.

The government portal reads: "These must be prescribed on the official psychotropic prescription form. Currently, there are UAE federal restrictions on the duration of prescription supply of CDa and CDb drugs and this depends upon the status of the prescribing physician.

In accordance with Federal Law No. 4 of 1983, there are special requirements for an out-patient prescription written for a CDa.

There are no special prescription-requirements for ordering psychotropic CDb drugs for in or out-patients and therefore these are ordered using a normal medical prescription."
