It’s almost an unwritten rule of showering...

When washing your hair, first you shampoo, then you condition and wash your body, before rinsing out your hair. It makes sense, because it gives the conditioner a bit of time to sink in, to make sure your hair is as moisturised as possible. Right?

However, not everyone agrees with this hallowed process. Beauty mogul Kylie Jenner has done a YouTube video with her half-sister Khloe Kardashian, in which they discussed their shower routines.

When asked what her process is, Jenner said: “Full shower routine: I like to get in and start with my hair, shampoo and conditioner. I like for my conditioner to be out of my hair and then I can wash it off my body… I feel like sometimes conditioner can linger on your body.”

Kardashian agreed with this analysis, saying: “And that’s why people get body acne, I learned that from my dermatologist.”

So have we been washing our hair wrong this whole time?

It might be good for your locks to give it extra time with conditioner, but is it potentially causing body breakouts? We asked medical director of CosmedicsUK Dr Ross Perry for his thoughts on the matter.

“In my opinion, washing your body prior to rinsing out conditioner shouldn’t cause a problem with breakouts, as we tend to only leave conditioner in our hair for a very short period of time, and not enough to leave a residue and cause a problem,” Perry explains.

He doesn’t think you need to specifically wash your body after rinsing out conditioner, saying: “It’s very unlikely this would cause a problem/cause acne, as the water would wash most of it away on our bodies.”

However, Kardashian and Jenner might not be miles from the truth – Perry says: “The only time it could be an issue is if you’re prone to getting blocked pores around the bikini line and underarms, as it could cause them to become infected with unrinsed conditioner, although that’s fairly unlikely.

“Exfoliating a couple of times a week, or each time you wash your hair, will help with getting rid of the excess conditioner left on the skin, if you are susceptible to blocked pores and breakouts on the body.”

So there you have it – it looks like your shower routine is safe for the minute. Well, until the next Twitter debate erupts over whether you should wash your legs or not…
