If you’re trying to steer away from putting chemicals into your hair but still want to get a glowing lighter hair colour, there are natural remedies that can help you with your dilemma and will leave your hair healthy and unharmed.

By using these DIY natural hair colour changers, your hair and bank account will be thanking you!

Lemon juice

What you need:

  • Quarter cup of water
  • 1 cup of lemon juice
  • Conditioner
  • Spray bottle (optional)

You may have heard that lemon helps lighten scarring, pigmentation and yes, you guessed it, hair colour!

Lemon juice works with the sunlight to create a natural hair lightener.

To lighten your hair with lemon all you need is to apply the lemon juice and water to your hair and sit in the sunlight until your hair dries.

You can combine the lemon and water into a spray bottle and spritz your hair with the hair spray.

Lemon can make your hair extremely dry, so you may want to add an almond sized amount of conditioner on your hair to keep it hydrated.

Vinegar and honey

What you need: 

  • 2 cups of distilled vinegar
  • 1 cup of pure raw honey

Vinegar works as a natural hair lighter, and honey has some traces of hydrogen peroxide, thus working as a great lightening agent.

To lighten your hair, mix the two ingredients together and spread generously onto your damp hair and leave overnight in a shower cap, towel or swimming cap.

Honey, Cinnamon and Olive Oil

What you need: 

  • ¼ cup of pure raw honey
  • ½ cup of water
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon or cardamom
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (optional)

Cinnamon and oil act as a natural hydrogen peroxide boosters to give a stronger lightening treatment.

Begin by mixing all the ingredients together and setting aside for 1 hour.

After the hour, start spreading the mixture evenly on hair and roots.

Leave the mixture in hair for several hours or overnight for best results.

Tea

What you need:

  • Chamomile tea leaves (from around 10 tea bags)
  • Boiling water
  • 2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp honey

Chamomile tea is a great way to quickly and effectively lighten your hair colour.

Start by boiling a little bit of water and add in the tea leafs for 10 minutes then add the tea in a bowl and mix it with the honey and cinnamon until it becomes a pasty consistency.

Once this is done, rub the mix around your hair and scalp and leave in for a few hours then wash your hair.

Caution: The tea leaves may stick to your hair so a double shampoo wash may be necessary to remove all remanence from the tea.
Water

Salt

What you need: 

  • 3 tsp of sea salt 
  • 2 cups of water

If you’ve gone to the beach, you know that the sun and salt does wonders for your hair. Salt is a quick solution to lightening your hair. Simply add a half a cup of water with 2 and a half cups of water and let it sit in your hair for 15 minutes. For best results, sit in the sun during that 15 minutes so your hair gets the full effects of the salt.
