You wouldn’t want your skin damaged, would you? But what about your hair? It will be first to catch the sun’s harmful rays. Shouldn’t it be on top of your checklist to protect? Your go-to ninja move is to grab the widest brimmed hat to cover it up, and you’re not entirely wrong. But let’s face it, who wants to go around looking like, well, a covered up ninja all summer long? Definitely not you. Read on for hair care tips on how to keep your crowning glory shine throughout the summertime.
1. Care for your colour
The sun has a way of bleaching out your hair colour, whether they’re dyed or not. And although this may not be a bad thing, because summer hair, the results can be very unpredictable and your glorious light brown locks can end up looking like corn hair. Now, more than ever is the perfect time to change your daily shampoo. Choose one that protects your hair colour. They even have variants for either fine, thin hair or those on the thick and coarse side.
2. Protect before you plunge
Just lather on sunscreen and you’re ready to go? Not so fast, summer sister. Your hair absorbs mostly everything it comes into contact with. Think chlorine and all the other chemicals swimming with you in the pool or whatever nature, and humans, have thrown into the sea. The simplest way is to wet hair with tap water before going for a swim. For an extra layer of protection, coat wet or dry hair with leave-in conditioner before any summer activity. Leave-in conditioners aren’t only hair detanglers that help fight frizz. They provide your hair with a layer of protection from heat and surface damage. Use a product which promotes your hair’s moisture level without oils or silicone so your hair doesn’t end up heavy and greasy.

3. Get rid of grease
Your skin is not the only one at risk of getting oily from the summer heat. Your scalp can easily produce more oil glands when the temperature rises resulting to greasy hair that’s not only unattractive to look at but also very uncomfortable for you. An easy fix for this is frequent shampooing, which has a flipside of drying out your hair. A safer alternative is to alternate your regular shampoo with a clarifying one to detoxify your scalp and leave it clean and naturally soft.
4. Treat your tresses
While it’s always advisable to regularly treat your hair as simple daily styling like putting it up in a bun can cause damage, summer exposes your hair to more stress. If your summer calendar is proving to be too hectic to sit in a salon for your hair’s much-needed vitamin boost, there are leave-in hair treatments you can carry around in your purse to whip out at any time for some hair TLC.
Now that you’ve ticked off all the items in your summer prep list, go ahead and enjoy the heat. You know you’re ready for it.
