The Best Christmas Adverts of 2019

The most wonderful time of the year is coming back and so are the annual Christmas ads

Christmas adverts on TV have already begun to roll out to bring the festive spirit from the screen to your home. A great festive advert can range from a tear-jerking blockbuster in minutes, while others can move even the grouchiest Grinch to feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

We've found some of the best ones so far from your favourite brands - as well as the highly anticipated John Lewis advert from the UK.

Scroll down to watch the top Christmas adverts of 2019 so far...

1. John Lewis and Waitrose - Excitable Edgar

With Bastille's cover of the 1980s classic track "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon, Waitrose and John Lewis delivered a touching Christmas advert featuring an adorably animated dragon and a little girl. The story centres on her friendship with the excitable dragon who simply wants to join in on the festivities, but his accident-prone fire poses a problem...

2. Argos - The Book of Dreams

Retailer Argos kickstarted this season's round of British Christmas advertisements with a fun festive twist to their holiday shopping catalogue, renaming it "The Book of Dreams".

The ad showcases a dad picking out a drumkit from the catalogue for his daughter, which then magically appears and transforms the kitchen into a concert set to the hit song, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds.

3. Sainsbury's - Nicholas The Sweep

Sainsbury's heartwarming Christmas ad is a faux "true story" on how a young Santa Claus started out as a chimney sweep accused of stealing a piece of fruit. The Charles Dickens-like tale follows Nicholas, a poor orphan boy, who is forced to work alongside other downtrodden children for an evil master. The retailer's founders are shown to inspire the child into creating the spirit of Christmas.

4. Boots - Bootiques

At first glance, Boots' 2019 Christmas spot seems like it will be a sentimental one, but actually brings to light the annual struggles of getting your Christmas gift shopping right.

The advert promotes its new e-commerce platform, Bootiques, as the answer to finding the perfect holiday present for anyone and everyone - the beauty bloggers, vegans, TikTok users, fitness fanatics, and ASMR fans.

5. Tesco - Delivering Christmas

Tesco's is a nostalgia-filled Christmas spot featuring a time-travelling truck delivering festive products to various decades, including to the late UK Bullseye legend Jim Bowen. The time-hopping "Back to the Future" concept is a nod to Tesco being in the business for 100 years.

6. Walkers Crisps - Mariah Carey

Walkers teamed up with music icon Mariah Carey to reprise her Christmas hit, "All I Want for Christmas" to promote the snacks. The singer is shown during a music video shoot, after which she gives out self-obsessed presents to crew members before getting into a tug-of-war with an elf over the last remaining packet of Walkers crisps.

What we love about it is Mariah's self-awareness of her meme-worthy behaviour, high notes, and her dainty little bite.

7. Asda - Let's Make Christmas Extra Special

British retailer Asda's Christmas advert is an emotional one featuring the Northern Lights. Inspired by the holiday tales from her grandad, a young girl generously spreads some magic around town, representing how some people are willing to go the extra mile to make sure the festivities are extra special.

8. Iceland - Magic of Frozen

Supermarket chain Iceland teamed up with Disney's Frozen for this year's Christmas advertisement. Much-loved characters Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and snowman Olaf come to life while playing a game of charades while they and a cheery family discuss their favourite things about the festive occasion.

Their tagline, "Perfect Christmas Dinner, for the first time in forever," is a wonderful nod to a famous song from the first Frozen movie.

9. Hafod Hardware - Be a Kid This Christmas

Set to a ukelele cover of "Forever Young", Hafod Hardware's modestly produced £100 (around AED 487) Christmas piece follows a day in the life of their smallest employee yet. The humble, family-owned store's theme this year is "Be A Kid This Christmas", and it's truly touching.

10. McDonald's - Reindeer Ready

McDonald's UK revisited their "#ReindeerReady" concept for 2019 with a heart-melting advert about two sisters, a loving father, and the magic of imagination.
