UAE residents will enjoy a long weekend from May 22, 2020
The UAE Federal Authority for Government Human Resources said that the Eid Al Fitr 2020 holidays will commence on Friday, May 22 (Ramadan 29) and will last until Tuesday, May 26 (Shawwal 3).
The official announcement came on Twitter, stating that Shawwal 3 will likely fall on either Tuesday, May 26, or Wednesday, May 27.
The exact dates will be confirmed by the moon-sighting committee.
Although the announcement was first made targeting the UAE’s public sector workers, the Eid Al Fitr holidays for private sectors have also been confirmed and run in tandem.
Eid Al Fitr will mark the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan this year, of which the date is dependent on the new moon cycle.
If the moon-sighting committee spots the new moon on the eve of Ramadan, the first day of Shawwal (Eid Al Fitr) will be announced the morning after as it signals the beginnng of a new month in the Islamic calendar.
