I want to bring my maid whom I sponsor back with me to the UK for July and part of August. She is Sri Lankan. Does anyone have any experience of doing that and what's involved in terms of visa's for the UK. My understanding she can't just enter on a tourist visa and she would need to enter as a foreign domestic worker which is more complex. Any advice appreciated.

Hi Sk... sorry, don't know anybody who brought their maid with them with less than 1 year under their belt...:( Perhaps you could try to hook up an au pair in the Uk during your visit back home? I have heard of http://www.findaupair.com/serverbusy.asp If you still want your maid to come over, try talking to the embassy staff face-to-face, you never know, rules can change and you just might be the first. Good luck and let us know how you get on;)

Kid vs Kat I have an appointment on Sunday to make the application. But I rang the British embassy and they said a domestic visa would not be possible as she worked for me less than a year. Do you know of people who got this visa with maids of less than one year? Thanks for your feedback!

Hi SK, I gather that you need her to work for you over the break? If so, try and withdraw her visit application and try the domestic visa as visit visa may cause probs for you in the Uk and here. People take their maids to their home countries often here (from what I read on this board). Don't lose hope, it can be done,;)

Sausage - thanks so much for your added value comments on my question. So helpful! To the rest of you who replied, thanks for your comments. I think I am going to have a problem as my maid has been with us for slightly less than a year so am attempting a visitor visa application for her which will probably get rejected. She is very unlikely to abscond as her husband is here in the UAE with her and he is not coming to the UK with us.

I believe, from and Embassy Visa officer, the number of absconders is up to 70% from the GCC. However, they would not divulge the demographic that they were running away from. Dispatches did a program on C4 about it last year. We have taken our maid, both to the UK and to Europe with no problems. (Though for the Shengen, one if the criteria is that you have to have children). WIth all these things, you think you know someone and you may well do OR they may take a chance at the fairer working conditions, higher wages, educational and health possibilities open to them should they abscond. If they do abscond the visa officer is contacted here and they DO check with the local employer to hear their side and this directly affects the asylum application. The Visa officers are not born yesterday and i know of some girls that were sent back to the Philippines recently.

Yes, all can apply for a domestic visa to be extended after they’ve run away. There are so many girls working as maids over here that will be free over the summer I just wouldn’t risk bringing someone over as more often than not they will run away.

Also, i guess once there they can apply for residency or asylum - can imagine some of the tall tales they will tell (if stories on here are anything to go by)

Also bear in mind most maids run away once in the UK. I interviewed about 20 maids last year and they had all run away from their Middle Eastern employers. The average salary of a UK housekeeper (maid) is between £300 - £500 [b'>per week. [/b'>(1810.50 dhs - 3017.25 dhs) edited by tally-ho on 07/05/2011 In the UK or the UAE? (interviewed them that is?)

http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/infs/inf17overseasdomesticworkers Just found this - this has all the info on bringing your maid to UK on your holiday, forms etc. They will also be able to advise you re salary - from memory you have to provide a copy of your contract and the salary you are paying but so long as it is a certain minimum, you do not need to change the salary to meet UK min wage. Also you have to sign something promising the maid will have her own room etc whilst travelling with you. Hope that helps

Just curious...why does a maid whose contract is governed by UAE law have to be paid a UK minimum if she is there with her employer? Because laws relating to minimum wages apply to all the territory, whether the contract of the employee is subject to the application of the UK law or of a foreign law. It also prevents employers from applying foreign laws to the employment contracts to avoid the application of the UK employment laws, including minimum wages, maximum hours rules...So if you"re working in the UK, then you're subject to the application of UK employment law.

Yes, I have brought our maid (Filipino) to the UK a number of times now and it is pretty straightforward. They need to have worked for you and been under your sponsorship for at least 1 year. Also the obvious, no criminal convictions etc. From memory, you can find the forms on the British Embassy website. You need to fill them in on-line and bring them into an office where they process them. You have to bring your maid with you and she will have her finger prints etc taken. I suggest you go with her as they ask for sponsors' salary certificates / pay slips & bank statements, which I'm sure you'd rather keep confidential! They then need about 4 weeks to issue the visa which is a work type visa and it is simple from there. Do bear in mind though that the cost of living is a lot more in the UK, so we always end up giving our maid quite a bit of extra money so she can enjoy her time off.
