I do think that schools here need to catch on to the idea that the cost of living has gone up and continues to rise and if they want to attract good staff, they need to offer a good package. You need to have a reasonable standard of living (does not have to be luxury) and live in a nice environment, otherwise this will have a direct impact on the quality of your work.

My sister works for a international teacher recruitment consultancy she has been inundated with applicants from a particular school in Dubai in the last couple of weeks to the extent that she called me to ask if I knew what was going on. I would love to know which school that is.

Where do schools suppose they are going to hire new staff from, theres not an unlimited amount of amazing teachers out there ready to hire at the drop of a hat. I really don’t understand what parents of this school don’t get, this is a school unlike no other, it is a profit at any expense school. They are constantly deducting teacher’s salaries, constantly adding on extra money for parents. No money is ploughed back into the school (as you can see the school is still unfinished) it only goes to line the pockets of the private equity firm. edited by tally-ho on 18/01/2011

I do not understand why teachers are not paid better. To me it is such an important job - teaching and guiding our children through their formative years -hugely important in my opinion.

My sister works for a international teacher recruitment consultancy she has been inundated with applicants from a particular school in Dubai in the last couple of weeks to the extent that she called me to ask if I knew what was going on. I am amazed that schools are allowed to treat staff in this manner, are packages not part of a teacher’s salary? Teachers do deserve better pay/benefits. Most of the good ones work way later than the school hours and work on weekends preparing lessons, phoning, grading, organizing special events for children etc Teachers provide a necessary service for the community so parents can lead productive lives in the workforce Teachers also try harder than anyone else to steer the troublesome ones back onto the right path. Here in Dubai they have taken education to people who otherwise could not find it, they should be honored to have the expertise of people that have trained for years to become experts in education and they should be treated as such.

It's clear that the new contracts are going to suit single people -which will suit the financial situation at the school better. One visa, one medical insurance, one flight-no free places for children of staff etc etc.

The housing policy has just been changed, all staff will be aware of it, enough are telling parents about it, moral appears low. yes, isn't the "change" that there is no longer an allowance and they'll have to go into school housing in Al Wahda/Silicon Oasis Apartments? Thats what I've heard...

It depends on the school that the person is teaching in and if they are single, married or have kids. GEMS for their elite schools have housing in JLT, Greens, Barsha and Springs. They also have housing in Discovery Gardens. Other schools offer a allowance or school housing. Repton have apartments in Silicone Oasis and Al Wahda (sp). DESC have apartments in Silicone Oasis and villas in Mirdiff. It really depends on school and family situation. edited by starsouthern on 18/01/2011 Your information is out of date and not accurate for one school here. Oh really which one? edited by Jumeriah Jane on 18/01/2011

Some families are lucky and get a villa in Springs or even AR working at GWA. I know ppl were fighting pretty hard to be put into a villa. Some succeeded, some didn't. Think most other GEMS schools provide appartments. Thats true, but if you negotiate it at the beginning of the contract, you're more likely to get what you want, however once you're here, they're pretty difficult to re-negotiate with...
