My Nanny is Pregnant.
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice if anyone can help or has been through the same.
I have a live out nanny who works full time looking after my 10 month old baby while I work. Around 6 weeks ago she announced to me and my husband that she was pregnant.
All though we was not happy about it we decided to support her and allow her to travel back to her home country for 6 weeks to give birth and come back (this is what she wanted to do).
We have always been very good to her, we know she takes advantage and doesn’t work as hard as she should be we let her get away with it as she is fantastic with are daughter, we also pay her more than double of a goods maids wage (just under AED 4000) In past week we feel she has pushed us to far and I’m struggling to find a solution, let me explain to you what has happened to push us over the edge.
Sunday morning she arrives at work and tells me she has booked her flights but she needs 12 weeks of work, I told her very sternly that I cannot allow that. She has full insurance and would be covered for the birth but only in Abu Dhabi, she refuses to have the baby in Abu Dhabi (as it too far away) and cannot get approval from her doctor to fly at 36 weeks. If we cancel her visa we lose our AED 5000 deposit and I have to find someone else and trust them with my daughter, today she turns up and complains that I haven’t got her ID card yet and it’s my responsibility to get it and pay for it!
I feel stressed by the whole situation and am spending my days trying to find a solution while she sits at home doing nothing!
Any advice would be good please.

As Suzy said, it's easy for someone looking in to give the best advice. Our maid has been with us too long and now does very little and has an attitude. I've known this for a while but it seemed a hassle to let her go. Her visa expires in Oct so I'm just going to wait till then but I should have acted a couple of months ago. Let yours go now and you will recoup the 5 000Aed in a couple of months if you pay the standard rate for a nanny. I don't want to stress you more but if her performance has slipped in general, she might also be paying less attention than you'd like to your daughter. We bring these people into our homes to help us but too often they bring their problems with them and end up causing a headache. Don't worry, you'll find someone good soon. What age is your daughter as you might be better looking at a day care for at least part of the day.

Thanks for the replies Guys. Me and my husband both have Abu Dhabi visa's but we are based in the Dubai office, her visa is Abu Dhabi that’s why her insurance is Abu Dhabi only. She will be leaving the baby at home with her family and flying back, that’s why I find it so hard to understand why she would want to have the baby in the first place she already has 3 children. I know your right just wanted someone else’s opinion so i know I’m not being a complete witch. :-/ Not a witch - just a sensible person!!!

Where is the husband - in Abu Dhabi??? Her problems are not your problems, unless you want to take them on you can expect alot more to come. Send her on her way and write off the AED5,000. It was her responsibility to get her ID. In the meantime why don't you contact an agency and get someone to replace her until you find someone else on a permanent basis?

Hi Lou - you know from the outside in the answer is always so much clearer. One - she is costing you a fortune AND she gives you cheek! Two - how will she be able to take the correct care of her baby and yours at the same time!! I am sure that if she has been saving AED4000 a month for how many months now? that she would be able to get by. I hate to sound so harsh, and in an office situation I would never say the same thing (albeit in the office there are other workers who can take over during pregnancy leave, AND they don't bring their baby to work so they can focus 100% on the job). I would say forget about the AED5000 lost, you can obviously afford if paying AED4000 a month for a maid. There will be other maids out there who will be able to take great care of your daughter and give you much less grief!!! edited by SuzyDuzy on 22/08/2011
