Can that be discussed here? I've never seen it talked about but I really want to find a friendly, non-denominational house of worship for this westerner.

[i'>Do you think that the speaker could be saying something wrong because you can't understand him/her? I thought each person had their own version of speaking in tongues?? I didn't know translators exist. When you say it is not scriptual, do you mean it is NOT in the bible? I am trying to understand is it the actual speaking of tongues that is wrong, or the speaking of tongues in front of an audience when you are a leader that is wrong? [/i'> Exactly, a church leader speaking in tongues is very wrong because it would be so open to abuse. The bible says a translator must be available and who has one? No one! If people believe they have the gift of speaking in tongues I believe it is for personal and prayer use only. edited by KKS on 04/10/2011 Thanks KKS - my Mum speaks in tongues and keeps it very private, in prayer as you say, She was visiting a church one day and the leader said something in tongues and my mother was quite surprised and mentioned something about needing a translator. We never managed to finish that conversation and I always wondered how one would have a translator since it such an individual thing? AnonDubai - I am probably not the best person to describe speaking in tongues, maybe KS can do better, but it is a gift given by God to you, presumably when your faith is so deep, and this is a private language between you and God - hence why it is normally used in prayer. I 'believe' it's a language that Satan cannot understand?? Each person has their own version - I heard my Mum once and it was really weird - like pop diddly dop.... it just happened to her one day and has never stopped. It's like she almost doesn't have much control over it. My mother has a very, very deep faith and has been gifted in many ways from God. KKS - maybe you can describe this better? That's the way I've always been told, that speaking in tongues is a gift and meant to be used in private or with others that can understand, otherwise it can frighten other's that don't understand. I've only heard it one time at a church and it was the lady behind me. She was speaking jibberish and shaking all over, jumping up and down, crying. I was very young at the time and it really scared me.

I just found it! I know what this is and have seen it before. I used to watch Benny Hinn quite often so I am familiar with these practices.

Sorry I didnt mean to post and run off but I got sidetracked. 1 Corinithians 14:27 says New Living Translation (©2007) No more than two or three should speak in tongues. They must speak one at a time, and someone must interpret what they say It is my belief that sure, speak in tongues privately, but not for show, and only if you have someone to interpret, and Id love to know where you are going to find that interpreter. I have walked out of a church mid sermon when the Pastor started speaking in tongues and would do so again as I believe it is subject to abuse when done in that way. And can I just say, this is the last place I ever expected to be having this debate lol

What is speaking in tongues? Speaking in tongues is a gift of the holy spirit, It is a way of communicating with God (some call it praying in the spirit). It was first given/practised at the time of the early church after the death and Ascension of Jesus christ and it is still practised today among christians. ACT 2 v 1-4 The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a'> as the Spirit enabled them. edited by remmex76 on 04/10/2011 Fantastic - see I knew someone could explain this much better than me!!

There are a number of references to it in the New Testament, notably “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17).

KKS replied : Not the original poster but I will tell you why I would walk out of a church that practiced speaking in tounges in church. It is simply not scriptural, and should not be done by church leadership in a church setting without a translator. I am intrigued by this, when you say its not scriptural... could you please explain as to the best of my knowledge it is. edited by remmex76 on 04/10/2011

If there was any speaking in tongues at FOE they wouldn't see me for dust!!! I've never seen it happen there (I;ve only ever seen it once, in a church in North Londn and it scared the whatsits out of me). The Pastor is American and his sermons are superb. There are a few hands in the air during hymns but that's about it and that happens in London too. Don't worry...we're all pretty normal. In fact last week, I did FOE in the morning and Barracuda in the afternoon!!

Thank you! FOE sounds like back home to me, especially when the bio on one of the woman leaders said she loves Texas. LOL By any chance, do they speak in tongues there? That automatically rules out a place for me and I want to be sure that's not going to happen.

We attend Feloowship of the Emirates and have been made to feel very welcome and enjoy going. It's a very lively, well attended and vibrant church (there are three services on Sunday).

I was just doing some research about this. In the back of this month's Connector magazine under the topic "Cultural and Social Groups" (lol) I found "Fellowship of the Emirates" www.fellowshipoftheemirates.org; "Dubai Evangelical Church Centre" www.deccc.com; "King's Revival Church Int'l Ministries" www.miraclesforyou.org; there is also "Word of Life Fellowship" but it's in Sharjah, which pretty far. The two that look most interesting to me are Fellowship of the Emirates and Dubai Evangelical Church Centre. I haven't been to any of them, and don't know anyone who has.
