Ok so this is a stupid question but I would really appreciate a sensible answer lol. I've just pressed the button on my oven that says self clean. It then locked the oven door and told me it would take 4hr and 20mins (not sure if thats good or bad) lol. I have no problem with that, but what actually happens and do I have to clean it afterwards?

Sad to say I'm quite excited about this. Just wish I'd left the shelves inside, currently they are sitting in the sink sparkling as best as I could get them, grrrrr. Will update with results after the afternoon school run.

The smell is from the burning off of the oils/grease accumulated over time. No need to worry. When you are able to open the over, it should be pretty much clean and may need just a wipe down with a damp cloth to take the ashe powder off. Miss my self clean oven so much!

Um, not sure. I don't actually have one (just been wanting one forever, lol). Let us know the outcome :)

Thanks Sam7. I was worried about the smell. Does it clean the glass door as well?

The whole idea with the newer self-cleaning ovens is that they heat to an incredibly high temperature, thus reducing the burnt on dirt to ash, which then just falls off the specially coated sides of the oven. The door locks during heating (and while it cools down) to prevent burn injury. edited by Sam7 on 05/10/2011
