Thanks for this post. We are currently changing our garden from [i'>well water[/i'> to municipality water. The ahem [i'>well water[/i'> is too salty and is causing patches of horrid black and green fungus, both factors killing most of the plants in our garden. A costly lesson learned.
It is a good idea to have two tanks. If the water fails for whatever reason you will have some spare rather than the irrigation going on and emptying your tank of all water.
For tank capacity, work out usage. Your garden tank will not need to be as large as your house tank. Make sure you also buy decent pumps and one for each.

in our compound they have been messing about with the irrigation, at the beginning it wasnt working properly as the pressure wasnt good enough, and so they have now put in a big water tank and an even bigger pump to pump it around to get the water to the grass as the grass was lovely when the turf went in, but not so now so yes i would do.
We have a big garden and we are being told a 2nd water tank is needed for the irrigation system. I read on EW about a family of 5 that had a big garden and didn't get another water thank for the irrigation system.
Is it really needed or just one of these things people buy just because they are told to do so?
