How to remove an abandoned vehicle from a private parking space?

For some time a Landrover has been in my barriered, covered Emaar apartment parking space. Emaar is aware of the situation and their security tried to help but only by telling me to call the police. Police came but only very briefly made a call to see if there was any loan outstanding on it. The policeman said there was none and refused to remove it because of that. I was very surprised. He was more interested in what Visa I had. Emaar won't remove the vehicle and it seems nor will police. Does anyone know a private way of getting the vehicle moved - once I can show letters from Emaar that the vehicle is abandonned? It is locked and has luggage in it. The police did say the name of the owner - which sounded Asian and he lived in UK. Actually the car has been there for a year at least. Thanks!!!

I just read it and thought about this thread: http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/abandoned-cars-in-their-thousands-cause-problems-for-dubai-communities "Once a car is suspected of being abandoned by its owner, inspectors from Dubai Municipality place a warning notice on it for 15 days. If the owner does not respond, the vehicle is then confiscated and taken to the scrapyard of the Contracts and Purchase Department in Al Qusais. The vehicle can be reclaimed for a Dh700 fee, but most just sit wasting away in the sun."

This article seems to imply that Dubai Municipality is the concerned authority to remove abandoned vehicles http://www.dubaichronicle.com/2012/04/08/abandoned-cars-dubai/ maybe give them a call and ask how to report it. Although I would have thought it woudl be a police matter too.

I can't understand why the Police are not being more active; I had someone park in my space at work - the Police were very helpful and said they would contact the owner, if he/she didn't show up immediately (he did after their call) then they were ready to tow it away. .

Thanks for all the replies. One security officer for Emaar did suggest I move the car to another space but then realised all the spaces were taken! (don't know how he thought I could do that!). There has been some concern about packed bags in the vehicle and what they may contain. The policeman was so very definite that it was not for him to have it removed (no debts outstanding on it) and also said no tow-truck would get into the under ground parking area. The local head of Emaar security was there with the security man for building - neither of them argued with the policeman. Only I insisted to him the police should take it away. He then started questioning me about my visa! Now Emaar is preparing a letter in Arabic for me to take to the police station. I shall do that when next in Dubai ( I no longer have resident's visa). Thanks to everyone - feel a little braver now!

I agree with Cafelate, call them again. We just had them come to our apartment building to tow a car that had been in our spot for about a week or so. They first came up with a story that the owner just flew out of the country for a holiday *right*. We did call more than once but they eventually took it away.

It sounds weired that the police refused to remove the car,, i thought they remove any abandoned car . only last month they removed one of our neighbour's car which was parked in an open parking in front of his building because it didn't move for 2 months and the security thought its abandoned, however there was no registraton plate on it, so maybe diffirent senario. I suggest calling the police again. edited by cafelate on 06/04/2012

You are presumably paying in some way for that space? In which case I would inform Emaar that unless they arrange for the car to removed or for you to be given a new permanent space, you will be deducting an amount from your service charges to compensate.

Have you tried asking Emaar to provide you with an alternate parking space since they've allowed an abandoned car to sit in your space for a year?
