Have some friends who are employed in a ME country that has recently had issues and is not normal as one would know it. Tied in to contract if to leave would take a huge hit they can not afford. Now legally do you think this would actually stand up in any court or an employer could hold them to contract?

SW - i appreciate it is "not all as it seems" but the standard fare for that country for decades has been "all is not as it seems" IMO; the issues and underlying tension are always there and raise their heads on occasion..... So it could be argued in a legal court that they signed in pretty much the same situation as is now..... if that makes sense. I have a very good friend who lives there and she feels that the situation there has been hyped by western media and she feels safe. And to be honest, we are (well most) know that the ME has a tendency to flare up no matter where we are, Saudi was apparently pretty safe but i was bounced out of bed by a bomb while i was there.

(sorry may not be relevant!) On your OP, it's hard to say without knowing the person's contract/company/arrangements etc.... They signed a long term contract with local employer, don't know the details enough yet, just they are tied in for another year.

I presume you mean in a country that has postponed it's high profile very fast car event? I think that if they had left a few weeks ago, they could have state a force majeur but not now. Stability is returning and to be honest, this is not uncommon to that country and it could be argued that the situation has not really changed much but it is just a bit more out in the open. edited by Izzy99 on 31/03/2011
