Thank you everyone for your imput. I didnt mention that I loved to drink juice (especially in a wine glass) whenever we go out. @ShijiCecil First of all good luck for your follow up test! I trust all will go well. if you can send me the chart I would really appreciate it. Regarding my weight.. I went home over xmas for little over a month (was 12 weeks at the time) and over indulged in everything I couldnt get in Dubai. So I gained 6.5kg!!! This is when I started the strict healthy diet and managed my weight ever since. So I too gained about 11kg already! my email is ngagiano at gmail dot com. @txjuliet - My OB/GYN is at Cooper Health and I was also recommended to Belinda, but unfortunately she is on leave until May! Currently waiting for Cooper Health to refer me to someone else. I think I now have more knowledge about GD than I had this morning and its all thanks to a forum like this!

First, really agree with the OPs that the best thing to do is go to a dietician. You've been diagnosed quite early so have time to get everything in check and in balance for the remainder of your pregnancy. I saw Belinda at Cooper Clinic, she was good. There is a book, Managing your diabetes by Lois Petersen which I found helpful. I would also recommend getting a diabetic cookbook just for some ideas - Kiokinu (sp) has a ton. Here's what I learned - the more complex the carbohydrate the better (ie, the brown-er). Get rid of any refined sugars and carbs in your diet. I also learned to eat small snacks regularly to stabilize my blood sugar. For breakfast I would usually have hard boiled eggs on the go, you can have spelt bread with a nut butter (no sugar added), and if I was desperate on time I would have a Nature Valley granola bar and just get in under the carb limit. For weekends I would have a breakfast burrito as whole grain tortillas are fine. If you go over, take a walk and it will stabilize your sugar some. For snacks I would typically have a small piece of fruit (apple or pear or berries) with a small handful of nuts. I would have my brown carb at lunch - brown rice, whole grain pasta. Then another snack (as above or granola bar) and then for dinner a lean protein and veggies. HTH and good luck.

Hi Niccy01, Me too in the same situation. 34 weeks pregnant and on my 32nd week check up (with Al Wasl) they found out that I have GD. I was shocked to hear this as basically am a person who doesn`t like any sweet items. The only sugar i used to take was with my bed coffee and that too brown sugar - less than a teaspoon. I was asked to consult the dietician. Last week met the dietician and am on diet since then. Tomorrow am goin to have the blood test again. Very much worried. After gettin pregnant, i was finding it was very difficult to have non-veg especially chicken and was mostly having veg diet, lots of fruits, freshly sqweezed juice, whole meal bread, rice (one of the culprit - i know), walnuts and can say .... no kinda junk food. Well as far as family history concerned, my parents are in gud health. Anyways, the dietician came to a conclusion that i was having more of carbo rich food instead of protein which has caused this GD. Now am following the chart she has given---light food every 3 hrs. hope my test is gonna be positive tommorrow. The best you can do is avoid to rice (may be you can have brown rice once or twice in a week, around 1 cup). have brown bread, brown Qaboos, brown pasta, boiled veggies, fresh veggies, grilled or boiled fish / meat/ chicken (no oil at all), 01 fruit every 3 hr or 01 glass fresh juice without sugar, tea/coffee/milks without sugar, bran flakes, cream crackers, digestive biscuit, boiled egg, cheese slice etc...the qnty varies from person to person. So cant comment on that. I put on around 14 kgs by 33 weeks. where as am supposed to put only between 7 - 11 kgs by 40 weeks. Let me know, if u are somewhr in this range and probably i can sent u the chart that was given to me. Just for your idea / reference.

There is not much you could have done to prevent this I am afraid, I am sure your diet was healthy. The way I understood it is you get this if your placenta is a certain way in the body and impedes the natural insulin your body makes from doing its job and so you end up with higher blood sugar levels...(this is what my doc told me) Of course other factors are relevant as well...family history, healthy weights etc etc. You need to count your carbs and up your protein. I attended diabetic clinics when I had it and checked my levels 7 times a day. The recommended amounts for a pregnant women according to the diabetic nurse I had is; [u'>[b'>Daily Carbohydrates[/b'>[/u'> Breakfast - 45 grams Mid morning snack - 15 grams Lunch - 60 grams Mid afternoon snack - 15 grams Dinner - 75 grams Bedtime/Evening snack - 30 grams You are free to eat as much protein as you like whenever you like just keep your fats low. Also, the higher the GI the better so opt for browns instead of whites always. Even eating this diet recommended by the nurse, I could not get my sugars in check so I had to take insulin injections...however, they didn't work for me and my sugar levels were actually higher so I adjusted my carbs until I got to a comfortable level.....usually 6 or below. I cut my snacks down to about 8 grams, the bedtime one to 20 grams, breakfast was 30, lunch was 45 and dinner was 60 and it worked for me.

Hi Niccy I had a similar problem and within 2 weeks managed to reduce my levels without any medication or injections. My problem was fruit and fruit juice - you need to cut that out (the juice especially) For bread, pasta, cereal etc - I switched everything to brown and it made a BIG difference. (Wholemeal pasta is actually much nicer).Bran flakes and a banana for breakfast worked for me as i was also working. For lunch a piece of chicken or fish with salad/veg is fine. If you are on the run a brown bread sandwich with a lean filling shouldnt be so bad. For snacks - edamame beans are good, some almonds, veg sticks and hoummus. Try to cut out the fruit and yoghurt as too sweet Also be careful with tea/coffee etc as the cream and sugar all adds up. Also - no sweets, biscuits, chocolate etc. If you are really strict you will see a big improvement fast. Good luck - hope this helps!

You *can* eat eggs for breakfast everyday - they are a pure protein and much better for you than cereal. Your doctor should have you sit down with a dietician and design a diet for you to follow. Other breakfast ideas are peanut butter on a slice of whole wheat toast, cheese, breakfast sausages, bacon, plain yogurt. Berries are particularly good for GD because they raise your blood sugar slowly, so add strawberries, raspberries, etc. But you'll have to probably get up a little earlier to do it right. edited by guinness on 05/04/2011

I am currently 27 weeks pregnant and just found out that I have GD or at high risk (dont know which as I was totally floored when the doctor called with the news). I now need to go on a no carb, no sugar diet. My diet the last few months consists of the following - cold cereal with milk, at 10:00 a fruit, lunch time I usually had a chicken salad, 4:00 another fruit with a yoghurt and at night is varied. So I THOUGH I was on a well balanced diet. I guess not! Doctor said I should not take in pasta, bread, carbs, sugar, fruit (which is high in sugar) or yoghurt and I should eat more protein. What else are left? If anyone else had GD can you give me some recommondations especially on breakfast. I know I can eat eggs, but I also know that you cant eat eggs everyday as it is also not good for you. I work from 8 - 6:30 and dont have time for preparing breakfast, so if you have something quick and easy that will be great! If not, I guess I will have to get up earlier. lol. Please please please help!
