I have just run out of the suncream I have been using for years for my kids, its from Australia and I can't find the same brand here. So I bought Nivea for Kids 50spf. I used it on my DD all day yesterday and she has come out in a huge rash all over for face and arms where it was applied and is swollen on her face. I am going to take her to the Dr and I am sure they will suggest antihistamines. Can anyone please recommend a gentle kids suncream 50 spf that I could try. TIA

I use "Sun Sense" Toddler Milk on my kids - I use the roll on which is fab for their faces and easy to apply... I get it from Australia, usually via visitors, but I know you can ship things here via http://www.pharmacydirect.com.au/ I have seen the Sun Sense (made by EGO so good on the skin) here occasionally, but never often enough to rely on. edited by famn on 09/04/2011

Hi and thanks for all your advice. I used Auscreen and Australia Cancer Council creams back home, never had any issues with them. I think I will get someone to bring me some when they come through. Have to search for a meantime one though.

TIA I really empathise with you, I had the same problem with all the commerical brands available here and gave up trying to find any sunscreen that did not cause a rash, so I make my own. Just out of interest which brand was it you used in Oz? Maybe you could have someone over there send you some of it.

Both of my kids were super sensitive to sunscreens on their faces -- especially when they were under five. They were reacting to the chemical sunscreens (Octylcrylene, Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate, Oxybenzone, etc.) that you find in all of the major brands -- Coppertone, Nivea, Hawaiian Tropics, Banana Boat. Try to find a cream that uses only mineral sunblocks (Titanium dioxide, Zinc oxide) and see if that helps. The mineral sunscreens were milder on the kids skin. Just be prepared that those kinds of sunscreens are thicker and will leave a slight ghosty sheen on their skin. It's because the minerals act as a sunblock and sit on the surface as opposed to getting absorbed into the skin. A bit of a hassle to wash off, but at least you know it stays on in the water. Kind of a pain for mommy, but better for the kids skin. In the U.S. I used California Baby sunscreen. Blue Lizard also didn't give them a rash. You might have to go to a place like Organics Cafe or a specialty baby shop to find a mineral sunscreen. Hope you find something that works!

Nivea urghhh I hate that stuff I used some eye liner once and my eyes flaired up - never happened with any other products. Anyway best sunscreen is Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen 50Plus for baby faces and tender places - pink bottle with blue top, it's not a sunblock but high factor lotion so you have to keep applying it. It is not thick like sunblock which actually can block babies pores/skin making them unable to sweat and therefore causing a rash. I have been through it before with my DD when she was a baby! I just don't know why they sell sunblock for babies its just not good. I have heard so many people have the same problems.

I have the same issue with one of mine, [b'>Boots sensitive soltan range i[/b'>s about all i can use on body but not face, anything on her face will bring her up in a rash. Same with aftersun. Use rfull length rash vests/hats. edited by Sticky Wicket on 09/04/2011

I have a bottle of coppertone but just bought baby faces from hawaiian tropic. Both my kids have sensitive skin and no problem even on DS 8 months.
