Quarantine question

I am confused! We are thinking about when we return to the UK and about our beloved pooch. She had a rabies blood test/check a couple of years ago and since has had her annual rabies jabs and other jabs as needed. However, the vet has said that she needs a rabies blood test at least six months before she goes even though she is up to date with all her jabs? Is this correct? Say if we needed to go suddenly - we would not then be able to take her? Is this something then that we should do every six months anyway? Thanks so much.

It has to be 6 months AFTER the blood test before you enter the UK. The quarantine period starts the day of the blood test, and it is calendar months thereafter. I know for certain as I have just put my SEVEN animals through their first set of jabs, back next month for blood tests, then they are safe to go home from November......

I understood that once the blood test had been done and so long as jabs were upto date you could leave straight away if necessary. So our boys had all the necessary tests and shots, we got their passports and they are here. If we wanted to leave in the next week I believed that we could do just that without any further tests needed. Not expecting to have to have another blood test done (I hope)....

Your vet is right, they do need to have a rabies blood test but only once. Even if they've had the rabies jab every year, they need to have the test to prove that they're free of rabies. Once the test is done, and comes back that the animal is rabies free, it's six months before that animal can enter the UK without quarantine, so basically it's like they've done quarantine here. The test is expensive (just under Dhs1000) but once it's been done it doesn't need to be done again unless you miss a rabies jab - it has to be done one day earlier than the year before (so 364 days) to remain valid. If you leave in a hurry, your pet will have to go into a quarantine kennels in the UK.
