So DD's passport has finally arrived and we have booked to fly to the UK with KLM this weekend. I am not afraid to say my stomach is churning at the thought of flying alone with a 4 month old.
Can somebody be so kind as to tell me exactly what KLM allow baby food wise on flights? Ive heard some airlines allow water and seperate powder, some ready made cartons - how much extra do i need to take if they make me taste some of it? obviously she isnt on solids yet.

Are aeroplanes cold or hot?? (you'd think ive never flown before but these are the stupid questions floating about in my head!) I was going to put DD in a sleepy suit with feet - will i need a blanket too?

Can i take my buggy to the door of the plane? will i get it back at my transfer in amsterdam?

ANY helpful hints/tips would be appreciated.

Im sorry, i know its been done to death but im never sure what airline accepts what and what country accepts what

It's not really the airlines that decide what you do or don't take, it's the airport security. I've discovered over the last few years, that Dubai normally just wave you through when you say "I've got baby milk etc". It's the UK you'll have difficulties with on the way back! BUT the UK airports are more wise to this and you can get all the ready made formulas etc airside (which I have never seen here, but I will stand corrected). In the UK they will make you taste every formula carton (thus rendering them useless), I have never had to do that here. I know it's daunting, but really a 4month old will be easy (ish). Try and get a bassinet seat, feed her on the way up and the way down (helps their ears) and as much as they want in between. And make her look as cute as possible - that way crew will always want a cuddle (thus giving you a break). Layers will be the key. Sometimes planes are hot, sometimes they are cold. Personally I wouldn't use a sleepsuit with feet (unless you are flying at night, when mine would have been confused not to have had a sleepsuit on), but rather layer up. That way, if it gets cold / hot you can add / take off accordingly. If you have a baby carrier (babybjorn / sling) take it. That way if your stroller doesn't appear at the gate you can carry her in it, and I've always found them a lifesaver on board for the inevitable walking the aisle. Believe me when I say it will be ok - I've found that I always expected it to be a zillion times worse than it actually was. If you want to swap your flight with your 4month old for mine with my 2yr old and 1yr old later in the week then be my guest! ;) Mine is not a flight I am looking forward to!!! Oh and KLM are normally so good (though I haven't ever had the kids in tow when I've flown with them, but they always seem great with those that do).

An Amsterdammer here, and have been travelling with DD few times a year, mostly alone:)) Well, KLM allows baby food and also has babyfood on board..Ask for a seat with a bassinet as it will make your flight much easier..KLM flight attendants are very cooperative and considerate while travelling with a baby..At Schiphol airport, they have very good and clean changing facilities for babies, and also lots of shops and yummie food:))) As as for the stroller, well it depends, last time i traveled, my stroller was right outside the aircraft when I stepped out and the security personnel even helped me install it! Do not worry, you will be in good hands!

Go to the KLM website, type 'babies' in the Ask your question here box, to right - all your question are answered there.
