thanks for sharing your experience gilly 3..being the first baby i am extremely scared..im even scared of blood test so i really hope the epidural works fine as i see that as the best option so far you may not even need one, so don't worry too much!

I'm so sorry for the late reply I've been on holiday :) Basically the needle was inserted to far in by a female Doctor perhaps the same one as Emma, the epidural numbed my entire body including throat, eyelids etc causing my LO to go into distrss & my heart rate and blood pressure to drop which was frightening for DH with all the bells & whistles going off. My spinal cord was clipped accidentally as it's a blind procedure, resulting in cerebral spinal fluid leaking which is beyond painful.It took 3 attempts and an extra 2 days in hospital to correct this eventually with a blood patch. In the mean time I could not b/f, eat, lift my bub or my head without morphine. I have been told this has not happened in that particular hospital in the last 2 years & only happens to every 1 in 200 women. The anaethsitists who did the blood patch were fantastic & so were the midwives & nursing staff! Very best wishes & please don't worry! Yes, it's good to be aware but occasionally s@$? happens to others it doesn't mean it will happen to you :) My bub & I are both very healthy and happy so it was all worth it!! wow, thanks you all , ladies, for the various responses. Most of your answers about the epidural seem to be positive..The fact is I am REALLY scared of having another emergency C-section and I have a feeling that I might just decide not to even try a natural birth and just go for an elective C-section. I know I'm a coward but it was so horrible last time and i was stuck in hospital for over 8 days because of high fever and an infection..I just want to have a bit more control this time if poss! Hi Ayda, I haven't delivered at Welcare, so I can't comment. But, you might want to have a discussion with your doctor about you possibility for VBAC or Elective C-section. Some doctors are open to a VBAC, and some won't even attempt it if you have had a previous c-section. So, it might be good to find out what your doctor is willing to do in terms of delivery (and this may help your fears, or at least give you more information for a better plan B). I had a medically-necessary elective c-section, and I will say that it was a very positive process because we had the luxury of time. For example, it took longer to get the epidural in correctly (they were very careful and meticulous) than it did for the c-section itself! I can't imagine what it would have been like if it was an emergency. I am not advocating one way or the other, but if your doctor says "no VBAC" then your options are find a doctor that will try for a VBAC or schedule that elective c-section. Hope this helps!

My friend ended up with a puntured spinal cord at afore mentioned hospital and the legal team set on her before she had recovered from the birth.

I had an epidural at Welcare in 2007 and then one last year at City Hospital, and I have to say... The one at welcare was more painful, took longer to administer and left me feeling a bit sore. The one at city was fab. Completely different.

There is always a chance an epidural won't work or might only partially work (on one side or white patch of sensation), in fact it is quite common, its not just down to skill of the Dr, it is harder for them to be accurate if you are overweight or have a curved spine or are ironically, in too much pain to keep still enough for the procedure. A planned c-section is a much easier recovery than an emergency and not a bad idea, but since you already have a little one that presumably you need to pick up etc it might be worth trying for a natural birth again, a lot of it depends on the babies position and head size etc so things might go fine this time around.

Gilly3, I am due in early October and am having the delivery at Welcare. I would prefer to go natural with my delivery but have kept epidural as an option (if I am not able to manage the pain). Ayda, i had an emergency c-section at Welcare and they gave me an injection that is similar to epidural. Anaesthesist was fab and I did not feel a thing BUT you still have to sign a disclaimer that says it can go wrong.

Hi ladies, Am happily expecting in Marsh 2012 and this would be baby no.2 for me! My first pregnancy was uncomplicated but the delivery at Al Wasl was a nightmare. After having the doc break my waters and experiencing painful contractions and a failed epidural the doctor sussed that my baby (born 4kg mashalla!) was too big for my pelvis and ordered an emergency c-section! With baby no.2, I am just not sure what to do. i experienced the worst of both worlds last time (labour contractions plus recovering from c-section). My epidural failed dramatically (Not sure if this was down to incompetence of doctor inserting epidural or plain bad luck) even tho they upped my dose twice and i am really scared that it may happen again! Should I just have an elective c-section? at least i will go in prepared! In case i decide to go the natural route, I am registered at welcare this time and was wondering what the success rate of their epidurals were? confused and worried :(
