Hello

Just wondering if anyone can provide some insight into a traditional arabic wedding? My friend is getting married to a Bahraini in a few weeks and I am attending her henna party and the wedding reception which I understand is females only.
My friend is German and his sisters are making all of the arrangements so she's not exactly sure of all of the details either.
Any ideas on what to wear (formal or more casual??), should I bring a wedding present etc

Thanks :)

Hello, The weddings I have attended have been traditional, and yes the ladies do have lovely gowns, I wore a long skirt and blouse and felt very comfortable, (didn't need to head to the shops). The ladies have their hair, make-up and henna done and the end result is beautiful, I did my own just as I would if attending a wedding or special event back home. At the henna party the ladies wear long dresses that are more casual, I wore a calf length skirt and shirt with elbow length sleeves. The henna party home was decorated in traditional carpets, cushions, fabrics etc, the bride has a photographer taking photos of her in her special outfit complete with amazing bridal jewellery, also there will be lots of dancing and music. My friends (local) have told me it is not necessary to wear the abaya, when the Groom and his party arrives an announcement will be made and the ladies cover up. I did not take a gift to the wedding but delivered it later. Like weddings at home they will all be different, hope this helps a little, enjoy this wonderful experience. Shanni

Thanks AnonDubai. Looks like I'm going shopping for a seriously glam dress ;) Any idea about the henna party? Does everyone get all dressed up for this as well or is this a bit more casual? Sorry, I have no idea about the henna party.

From my understanding, you need to wear a fancy long dress that is found in many stores in Dubai. You should have your hair and makeup done over the top (but do it at home to save money) and wear lots of costume jewelry and a flashy pair of heels. Do not bring a gift. Bring an abaya and shayla in case the groom arrives and you may want to cover at that point.
