Questions about Compulsory Islamic Studies - liberal family

I've started looking into Islamic Studies which are compulsory for Muslims and would have a few questions (it seems to be hard to find answers from the Internet).

I understand children will need to start at grade 1?

How many lessons do they have per week? What will other children study whilst Muslims are doing Islamic studies? Would my children miss out on other subjects? Or would their days be longer?

How many Arabic lessons do they have? Is it more than non-Muslim? Nobody in our family speaks Arabic.

How are the teachers likely to feel about our liberal views? My husband is a very liberal Muslim. In the UK I tick the box 'no religion' when as here I have to call myself Christian again. We weren't going to bring up our children as Muslim but were going to talk about different views and let them choose whatever ideology suits them (if any). But as our surname is Muslim I understand that here they will get taught about Islam at school (well I don't need to do it then, I can just focus on other views).

Do the children need to pray or read Quaran? Anyone in the same boat?

Hi - My husband is what I would call a "liberal muslim". I am not religious. When our daughter was registered at her school my husband put her down as muslim (which I have no problem with). She is in Grade 1 and does Islamic Studies twice a week. There is Islamic A and Islamic B. Islamic A is for children from Arab nations and Islamic B is for non-Arab muslims. I was initially concerned that it was taking up valuable time that could be used elsewhere - she is behind in maths so I thought her time may be better spent doing maths revision. I spoke with her teacher and she said that we could take her out of Islamic Studies if we wanted to as she is not from an Arab nation nor Arabic speaking. We have decided to continue with the classes at this stage as she enjoys it and it is not heavy going. She has been taught about the creation of mankind etc., the correct way to treat people, a few prayers and about performing ablutions prior to prayer - nothing too taxing. The kids who don't do Islamic studies generally just muck around doing puzzles and games or reading while the others are out at Islamic studies, so she isn't missing out on any new or important work. She does the same amount of Arabic classes as the other kids (two per week) as she is a non-Arabic speaker. Hope this helps!

All I know is that if your children are legally deemed as Muslims here, which means that their visa application says they are Muslim, then they will have to take Islamic lessons. There is no such thing as a "liberal Muslim" in the eyes of the authorities here. You either are Muslim or you aren't. You need to ask these questions of the school where you are planning to send your children. I think that many of the answers to your questions depend on the individual school. I'm sorry that I could not be of more help.

Sorry I posted this thread under Dubai and Northern Emirates too as no answers here - I guess not that I should suspect any. New here so not sure what to do. Thanks for reading!
