Childcare for when I give birth?

We may be moving to Dubai very soon. We are just waiting for official job offer. I am 29 weeks pregnant so we would have to make sure we could get there whilst I can still fly (I think Emirates allow you to fly up until 34 weeks with a doctor's certificate).

I have 2 year old twins and we are worried if baby decides to come in the middle of the night who could look after them. We would like to get a nanny/maid but am not sure how quickly that would be organised and how much we could trust her after such a short period of time?

Any advice appreciated thank you!

Hi, if you contact Healthbay Polyclinic, they have qualified nurses and nannies you can hire by the day, week or month. Good luck! Thanks Samie x

Thanks Umm A, it is going to be very tight! Hopefully if the official job offer comes through, my husbands work will sort out his visas etc and we can get to Dubai sooner rather than later.... We definitely want a maid/nanny and I have heard live out are not common so I guess would go for live in. Our parents couldn't come at this stage so family is not an option. Thanks for your ideas, I think that's what we'd have to do but I am not sure how happy other mums would be if this baby decides to come at 130am in the morning!!!! I hope you will find a good nanny, and I'm sure you will. You can always sign up for the fairy godmother club and keep it as an option. Most mothers here know how difficult it can be when you have no relatives or friends here and will be more than happy to help even if its 1:30 in the morning ;). My son would love some 2am playmates :P UA is right, once you get here, let us know where you live. I'd be happy to babysit on such a happy occasion ;-).

JPS1 - depending on what you decide, my maid has a friend that sounds wonderful and would be avalable to come to Dubai. She has worked with children in Sri Lanka and currently works in a private hospital there... supposedly English is very good. If your husband's work can help with the visas then getting someone directly might be faster and less expensive (but of course, you can't "trade them in" like with an agency maid... sounds terrible, I know!) Good luck - you have an very exciting couple of months ahead of you, for sure!

A friend has a nanny through an agency. The agency sponsors the maid and does all the paperwork and is responsible for her and she just pays the agency a monthly fee/salary. That might be an option until you are properly settled, paperwork done and baby born etc. Sometimes all the official stuff can take a while and you don't need the added stress when you are heavily pregnant, a newbie and boiling hot in Dubai. I would personally prefer a fixed arrangement where I know I could just call the maid from her room at my home to come so I can rush off. Let me know if u want me to find out the contact details for the said agency. All the best with the move.

Are you planning on getting a live-in nanny? I know some agency have nanny's you can hire on a weekly basis but Im not really sure I would trust them). If so get the nanny as early as possible and spend weeks watching her with your twins. Another solution for you might be The Fairy Godmother Club (Dubai) on facebook, I know they have helped a mother before. 3-4 mothers arranged a lot of playdates together with the pregnant mum in the weeks before her due date so the twins knew the other ladies and their kids, and then they babysat the children when it was time for her birth. Or even just join some mum's clubs around Dubai and get some friends fast. I hope you find a good solution if you are coming here

Aw thank you clindsey. Yes I am a busy lady, but it is wonderful. We are very much hoping this job works out as we need more space/help than what we have in London for our children (Our families are in New Zealand). I really don't want to give birth without my husband and would probably go for a home birth over that (If I was able to in Dubai?). I think we would take your advice but it is also reassuring to hear there are temporary services. Deep breaths!!!

I would say either bring a family member with you for a few weeks, hire a maid very quickly or make friends as fast as you can. Most expats in Dubai have live-in maids so most things are set up based on this assumption (e.g. there are few temporary babysitting services, night nurses, etc.). The other option is to assume that you deliver in the hospital and your husband stays at home with the twins - that's very hard though. Two year old twins and 29 weeks pregnant ... wow, you are a busy woman!
