I'm making a puree for my LO and the recipe uses split red lentils. Couldn't find these yesterday in the Spinneys in Motorcity but there were a lot of different types of dhal. Is there a particular dhal that is like split red lentils that I could use as a substitute?

I bought chana dhal but I think it's more like split peas rather than lentils.

Split red lentil is called masoor dal in Hindi. (dal is Hindi for "lentil") Both masoor dal (split red lentil) and moong dal (tiny yellow ovals) are great for baby food; the chaana dal will most likely cause stomach discomfort (colic) and it won't cook down to a smooth puree as quickly or easily. My local Spinneys has both masoor and moong dal on the shelves.

Try moong daal, it is similar lookibg to chana daal.but has smaller grains. Moong daal.is the most preferred first food for baby as it is very light and easily digestible. chana daal is split bengal gram, cud be a little heavy for.babys tummy. HTH
