Hi,

I am 16 weeks pregnant with my first baby & currently seeing doctor Yamini at Al Zahra hospital as I am based out of Tecom & that is really close & convenient. I have health insurance that covers me upto AED 20000 for normal delivery & upto AED 35000 for C section. My queries are-

1. Is my insurance sufficient to cover the costs at Al Zahra or Welcare Garhoud (I have an appointment there with Dr. Janaki in 2 weeks)?

2. Is it better to go to government hospitals? Lot of of people on the forum have referred Latifa Hospital. I am quite clear on the registration process, the transfer at the later stage to the hospital & the downside of not being attached to one doctor - all thanks to expatwoman posts. Is it worth it?

3. Even with insurance, do I need to buy the ante natal & delivery packages that the clinics (private & government) offer?

4. Any other tips from moms who delivered in Dubai will be most helpful.

Thanks!

Hi Ladyjo, my insurance covers all the reputable & big hospitals including Welcare & Al Zahra. I was also under the impression that I need not go for a package but the midwives at Welcare themselves told me to get one (they are aware that I have insurance). Anyway, I am due to call my insurance company help line today to sort these out including the cover for new born which I think will be on reimbursement basis till the baby's insurance card comes. Hi pujak.. just wondering what did you find out regarding costs at al Zahra? Are you still seeing Dr Yamini? I am thinking to shift to her. Would really like some feedback regarding her and al Zahra. Thanks

Important thing to find out is if your chosen hospital is too expensive for a 20k maternity limit. some hospitals are quite expensive when it comes to lab and radiologists and all other things. Instead of handing them your well earned 10k for a package,..why not keep it for the delivery for any unexpected costs on top of your insurance limit. Keep doctor in the loop and be informed. It would work out fine.

Hi PujaK Isn't Welcare in your hospital network ? if that's the case your insurance will be valid there you don't need to take an additonal package as Jumeirah_Jane said this limit is sufficient. But also check if you have a cover for the new born. Some insurers add this for 30 days after the baby is born. Also note private medical insurance is not accepted at govt. hospitals.

Thanks for your advice comp99. I had visited Welcare for their maternity tour this weekend and the midwives said its best to sign up with a package as that will keep costs under control. But what you said about keeping the doctor aware of the limit makes lot of sense. Only thing is I have had just one appointment with my doctor so there is no so called rapport with her yet, whether she will even be bothered to keep my limitations in mind is not something I am confident of. Still I will keep her in the loop & hope for the best.

Thanks! If you are comfortable with your current doctor , have a chat with her about your insurance limitation and see if she is willing to work with you in keeping cost down by only doing the tests absolutely necessary. A colleague was in a similar dilemma with 20k maternity limit. Her doctor kept a check on things and she delivered at city hospital within her maternity limit. Get full details from the hospital about all test and number of consultation plus delivery charges for normal and c section. Do your maths. If you are covered with insurance .. package is not useful for you. After delivery you would need to pay for all things related to new born (which you can reimburse depending on your compant policy). So should have some back up cash for that at time of delivery. Hope that helps.

Hello there, Delivery packages are more for people who do not have insurance cover. For the mediclinics (Welcare, etc) 20,000 dhs is more than enough, even for the c-section. I think you should be fine. Check with your insurance if they cover for NICU (Neo-natal intensive care unit) just to be on the safe side. You don't know what can happen and NICU bills can be quite hefty. If you are not going to deliver with the doctor who followed you, be sure that you get all the medical records which you need to send to the hospital. They need to know all your medical history (and your baby's). On the day of the delivery, ask you hubby to have all the docs ready to give to the midwife (even if the hospital already have them). All the best
