Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Mediclinic City Hospital
Mediclinic City Hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC), which was recently officially opened by Chairperson of Dubai Healthcare City Authority HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is the UAE’s most advanced facility for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It provides a range of facilities and services, supported by the latest generation of equipment, some of which are entirely new not only to the UAE but to the entire MENA region.

Built in collaboration with Mediclinic Middle East’s sister platform in Switzerland, Hirslanden, patients at the CCC can, for the first time in the UAE, benefit from the sharing of knowledge and experience between some of the leading oncology experts in Europe and the Middle East, as well as access to the very latest treatment programmes and technology.

Scope of Service

The CCC combines diagnostic procedures with the treatment modalities of surgery, medical oncology and radiation therapy, all under one roof. The range of services ensures the very highest levels of care for cancer patients. Services at the core of the CCC include:
  • Medical oncology (including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and endocrine therapy)
  • Radiotherapy (with TrueBeam linear accelerator and CT Simulator)
  • Surgical oncology
  • Radiology (breast cancer screening and diagnosis programme)
  • Nuclear medicine (diagnostic and therapeutic service including PET & SPECT CT, automated injector/FDG)
  • Reference laboratory
  • Specialised pharmacy for chemotherapy
  • Supportive care (psychological support, physiotherapy, nutrition and Pain Clinic)

State-of-the-Art, Cutting Edge Technology

The value of the service provided by the CCC stems from the quality of the technology and equipment it houses. The CCC offers radiation therapy using the first TrueBeam linear accelerator in the UAE, and the only Varian 13.7 version in the MENA region, using the newest treatment technology of flattening filter free energy.

In addition to conventional radiation, this high-tech device also enables the CCC to perform stereotactic radiotherapy with an exceptional accuracy of deviation of less than one millimetre, so that even tumours which are located close to critical areas (heart, lung, spinal cord etc.) can be targeted with extreme precision. This level of accuracy means that higher single doses of radiation can be administered, with the overall number of single doses reduced. Based on the high dose rate, the treatment time can be reduced from one hour to between 10 and 20 minutes. This provides greater comfort for patients, reduces side effects and improves quality of life. It also minimises the likelihood of the development of secondary cancers in later life.

The device registers movement caused by the patient breathing and, with respiratory gating, allows the radiation to be applied only during defined phases of breathing so that damage to healthy tissue is reduced. This is the first machine in the UAE with an integrated respiratory gating system. The use of these advanced radiotherapy techniques is recommended by the most recognised evidence-based international guidelines (NCCN, ESMO, ASTRO).

The TrueBeam data is matched to that at Hirslanden in Switzerland, Mediclinic’s sister platform in the project, as well as international published data and Varian standard data with a variation of less than 0.5%. This technology matching means that it is possible for a patient to be treated at both the CCC at Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai, or at Hirslanden in Switzerland, without the need for dose recalculations.

Collaboration is also enhanced with the practice of multidisciplinary cancer care and the establishment at the CCC of a tumour board of various medical disciplines, including surgeons, oncologists, radiotherapists, specialist doctors and general practitioners. Together, they review cases not only at the CCC but at other cancer treatment centres across the group in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Switzerland, ensuring the most effective diagnosis and management of cancer patients.
