
Dr. Gerald Zimmermann
Orthopedic Surgeon with experience in General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Zimmermann is an internationally recognized expert in the regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues. His scientific research – in particular on growth factors and their clinical application – has been widely published in high-ranking international journals and presented in over 200 scientific talks. Further developing his research, Professor Zimmermann’s current focus is on the clinical application of adult stem cells for bone and cartilage regeneration.
Due to his international reputation, Dr. Zimmermann frequently delivers center of excellence courses in the clinical application of adult stem cells and growth factors to international colleagues and offers them observerships in this area. As one of the first course directors for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses in Germany, he has played an important role in introducing and universally establishing this treatment algorithm in this country.
Dr. Zimmermann is coordinator and principal investigator of several international prospective, randomized, Phase III studies, for example in the area of cartilage regeneration. As chairman of the advisory board of the Karl Kärcher Foundation for Regenerative Medicine, he promotes research on, and the treatment of, osteoarthritis.
Dr. Zimmermann is a specialist in general surgery (2000), trauma surgery (2003), orthopedics and trauma surgery (2007), and specialized trauma surgery (2007). In addition, he is a qualified chiropractor, emergency medicine physician, and sports medicine physician (2014). He did his clinical training at the University Medical Centre Mannheim and the teaching hospitals Theresienkrankenhaus in Mannheim and Fürst Stirum Klinik in Bruchsal. In 2001, he took up employment at the BG Trauma Center Ludwigshafen, where he ultimately served as head of section until 2009, when he joined the Theresienkrankenhaus in Mannheim, initially as senior consultant (leitender Oberarzt) at the hospital’s Orthopedic and Traumatology Department.
Qualification
Dr. Zimmermann studied medicine at the Universities of Erlangen, Mannheim, und Houston, Texas. He received his PhD and his habilitation in orthopedics and trauma surgery from the University of Heidelberg. Since 2009, he has held a professorship at the University of Heidelberg, and since 2013, he has been head (Chefarzt) of the Orthopedic and Traumatology Department at the Theresienkrankenhaus in Mannheim – the teaching hospital of the University of Heidelberg.
