40,000 tonnes of alcohol confiscated
That's a lot of booze!
Sharjah: Sharjah Municipality confiscated over 40,000 tonnes of alcoholic drinks in addition to a large number of counterfeit CDs during a campaign conducted last year.
Jaafar Ali Jaafar, head of the Solid Waste Department in the Municipality, said the inspection campaign was carried out with the co-operation of several other government departments.
"The goods were confiscated in 2010 during a year-long inspection campaign, and we are continuing the campaign in order to rid the market of all these counterfeit and illegal goods," he said.
Posters removed
The municipality is also removing posters and advertisements on a weekly basis which have been put on the walls of buildings and bridges. These types of advertisements are considered litter and the public should stop polluting the city, he said.
He pointed out that the municipality also co-operated with Bee'ah, the Sharjah Environmental Company, to clean up residential and commercial areas, and prevent companies from illegally dumping rubbish from containers.
"Those who place the posters will be faced with a heavy fine, because we all have the responsibility to keep our city clean. And with the cooperation of Bee'ah we have already allocated abras to remove the plastic and litter from Khalid Lagoon in addition to cleaning up the open spaces in front of buildings," said Jaafar.
