I have been struggling with my skin for about six months, tried lots of topical ointments and antibiotics from the dermatologist with no result really, still getting huge spots and they are sore. Never had skin like this as a teenager. Next step mentioned was accutane(I think thats how its spelt) Have another appt on sunday. Have been reasearching on the net, good and bad reviews.
Just wondered if anyone had tried it, using or any advice please.
Its really getting me down now
Thank you

I am having same problem right now, amd my teenage boy are very bad too. I am going to Kaya Clinic in Town Center and their treatment help a lot. They advised me to take antibiotics, but I'm a bad girl who hates to take medecine and I couldn't resign to take so antibiotic for a month (ok, I might have a nice skin, but then my stomach and liver will be a disaster...). I have also noticed that my skin and hairs condition (as well as all the family) drastically changed when we moved in our new house (which is a very old one)....and we all came to the conclusion that there is something in the water that is pretty bad for our skin and hair (We need now to wash our hairs everyday and twice in order to have them more and less ok, and they look so bad and so dirty !). Was abroad this week-end and in just 2 days, hairs and skin changed a lot....and now, it's back to bad again.... Just a though I wanted to share. Perhaps others had the same experience and found a solution ?

Its a clear liquid...give it a shot before you start the meds.... my hairdresser (male) recommended it to me - he told me his horror story of adult acne and how it turned around for him. He felt sorry seeing my breakout.... Since then I have recommended it to a few friends - all have had good to excellent results.

I had horrible acne as a teenager... Started again about a year ago - someone recommended Dalacin T (AED30 or so off the counter), didn't expect anything but voila! Drastically reduced in 3 days and all gone soon. I also used it on back acne.

Twiglet I totally sympathise with you- I got it 2 years ago- had had spots throughout my teens but nothing like it- are they painful and itchy? I tried all sorts of topical stuff but went to drs at the end of my tether and he prescribed roaccutane- it was amazing- I too had very dry lips with it - eyes were fine, no other side effects at all. After a month it had cleared- I still have scars but they are not horrid bumps as before- I took it for 2 months and I take it for 2 days before my period when I can feel something under my skin. You have to get it on prescription- Definitely worth it - was getting very depressed with people talking to my spots and not me!

Citywoman did you get the roaccutane from a Dermatologist or can you just buy it from the Pharmacy? You definitely need to get a prescription because a certain dosage needs to be recommended based on the intensity of your acne and your weight!

I agree! Roaccutane is a really good treatment although while taking it, I had dry lips and dry skin, couldn't tan and had to apply 70SPF to protect my skin from the sun. But now it's all worth it because i dont get anymore pimples. Just the occassional one every couple of months ! Really worth all the trouble

i have suffered from adult acne since we moved to dubai 5 years ago. during this time i saw 3 dermatologists incl dr nasir and they tried everything and whatever they didn't try, i tried, many treatmens and products, antibiotics, natural, herbal, soaps, creams, lotions etc which are mentioned below, none of them working. i do not have cystic acne, neither is the acne that bad, but my skin was always breaking out and it never was clear and at times sore. it severeley impacted my self esteem. i am now in month 5 of 20mg roaccutane a day. it is a very low dosage and taking into consideration also my weight, i will be taking the meds for a whole year. it is fantastic. my skin cleared up after 3 weeks and after 3 months the texture of my skin started changing. i only have one side-effect: dry lips and i overcome that by using purelan nipple ointment for breastfeeding mothers as recommended by fellow ew'ers. i see dr maryam saeed and she test my cholestrol etc monthly. she links my acne to pollution and water in dubai. i wished i had gone onto this meds many years ago in stead of suffering and wasting so much money on rpoducts that didn't work. edited by citywoman on 01/02/2011

Hi , When she first came here, my maid had very bad acne. A friend of mine advices a natural chinease creme : "bamboo salt creme" and the result was really good ! He told me that before using it for the first time, he took it with him back to Belgium to a laboratory in order to know what exactly it's made of, and he was told there was nothing dangerous about it ! Maybe you can try it, its sold only in the dragon mart pharmacy shop ! To make sure it's safe you can do the same and take it to a laboratory before you use it ! It really worked for both my friend and my maid ...

Hi Twiglet, I don't know if it is going to help you but, incase of, I tell it to you Sometimes to have a natural soap, organic without chemicals, is just perfect...After, depending on your skin type, you can use Clinique Cleansing formula and to top that some cream to rehydrate the skin because the Clinique Cleansing is strong but I found it very good Also you can make a weekly mask to your skin Think of cleaning your face twice per day I wish you success!!

I had terrible acne as a teenager and use accutane for about 5 months when I was 16. During those 5 months my lips were dry and I think my skin got a bit worse the first month as it was getting all of the bad stuff out. After that my skin was amazingly better, no more acne till about 2 years ago (it's been over 15 years, sigh). I'd like to go on it again but want to wait till I'm done having kids. Except for the dangers with getting pregnant I would absolutely recommend it 100%.

Although i haven't personally used Proactive or Roaccutane, my son has used both (from 17-18 yrs of age). He used the Proactive system for about six months, with no noticeable improvement (apart from ruining all the bath towels with bleach spots, so dread to think what it's doing to your skin!) before then switching to accutane, via a dermatologist. As has been mentioned, very very important that you're not preggers or trying to conceive whilst using this. His skin cleared up within a couple of months (I think he used it for a total of 4 months?) and he hasn't had a problem since. Another less-invasive (and, yes, slower) option to possibly consider: although I haven't suffered adult acne per se, I have always had oily T-zone, enlarged pores, and more pimples than my teenage daughter!! I was eventually recommended the Dr Hauschka skincare range, which after a few months finally brought my problems under control. Still have 'combination skin' and get the odd monthly spot, but nowhere near as badly as I used to, which I'm quite surprised about, I must admit, considering the good old Dubai heat! edited by Sam7 on 31/01/2011

Hey Hooters, thank you for the advice, i have bioderma face wash bought it today to try, will pop into the pharmacy and see that lady, thanks again. She is there till 25th Feb. Dont let her flog you everything though as u will spend a fortune. I recommend the soap (which you have) the eye cream and the big bottle of moisturiser if you want to get the serum for brown spots from the sun or scarring then you can but not essential. Also, any high factor cream will be ok, doesnt have to be Bioderma and also any exfoliator will work the same too.

Thank you, Thank you Will go try proactive tmw and see how it goes sundevil, fingers crossed. Thanks again for the replies x Twiglet, I got adult acne about a year ago when I was 28, lots of spots which were hard with lots of oil in them. once they went, they scarreed my face. It was awful. I brought the proactiv stuff a few months ago. It burnt my skin and left it so dry that it bled ans went scabby. The product is very strong and unless you have severe acne and a doctor recommends it, i wouldnt use it. I have all the stuff and would be willing to give it to you, as it is not cheap to buy. I went and saw a dematologist and they prescribed Bioderma. You can buy it in the chemists. Has nothing harmful in it and is perfume free. I am amazed by the results. The sebum soap is amazing. then I follow with this serum which reduces the scarring, then factor 30 cream, then their amazing moisturiser. You also need to exfoliate once a week too and use the eye cream If you go to Bin Sana pharmacy next to River Island in MOE the Bioderma woman is in there, ask her to evaluate your skin, you stick your head in a machine and see all the damage to your skin from spots, wrnkles and the sun. I have seen such an improvement already and my wrinkles are less as well as the brown marks on my face I would defo stay away from any other product now. Let me know if u want the proactiv but pls be careful. I can show u a pic of what it did to me!

I used this as well as both my sisters when we were teenagers. I took it for 7 months. It is very effective but you need to have your doctor monitor you. I personally had to have a blood test to check my kidney function before I was allowed to take it and then every so often especially if you use it for a prolonged period. As Alexalex1 said you MUST NOT get pregnant under any circumstance it is very dangerous for the fetus. It does dry out your skin so lots of moisturiser especially on you lips. I also found that I burnt much easier if I was out in the sun so be careful of this also. Also it can take a few weeks to kick in, sometimes getting worse before it gets better so don't stop if it does just keep taking it. It really does work very well. I know these are all warnings but other that the dry lips I did not have any really negative side effects nor did my sisters and it is very good to get rid of acne. I can sympathise with you as I had to deal with this too, so good luck and hope you find the solution that is right for you.

Please go try the Proactive and follow the directions using it twice daily for at least a month and see how it goes. The sun only worsened my problem and made my sun spots bad. Proactiv cleared up all my acne (and it was the cyst kind that would stay for weeks and hurt) and it cleared up my sun spots. It literally changed my skin and I don't mean to sound like a commercial. But I would have days where I wouldn't leave the house b/c my skin was so bad and then one day I try the Proactiv and the acne is gone and I think, "Why didn't I try this sooner?" You can find it in Boots. Get the starter set to start with. You'll need the three to make it work; face wash, astringegent (green liquid), and acne lotion solution. I also follow up with my regular lotion (Purpose) and I don't use their mask but maybe once every couple of months.

Have you tried Proactiv yet? I struggled for years with what you are talking about with it being so bad somedays that I didn't want to leave the house. I didn't have acne as a teen but it hit me hard in my 30's. Tried several things with the dermatologist but nothing worked. I finally broke down and spent the money on Proactiv and it literally changed my skin.

Have you just been to a GP and had some blood works done and also a recent gyny appointmnet with a full scan to check for PCOS? It may well be your hormones playing up as you get older. In the mean time try salt water and the sun and see if that helps.

i took it although i did not even have acne but just a few pimples, because I do not believe that it is bad at all. the only problem is if you want to get pregnant, that would be highly highly dangerous. when i took accutane i had not a single pimple after one week and also my hair looked wonderful and it never got oily
