Anyone flown with them? How are they for short hall flights?

Are there alternative cheap airlines in India - looking to get to Kulu airport up in the North and can only find Kingfisher which is almost AED3000 which seems a bit high really.

Or would it be OK / safe for a single woman to go from Delhi by train?

TIA

I flew Air India a few years ago (London-NY...cheap way to do it). It was fine; let's say you get what you pay for, but it was fine. The food was really nice. Have a great trip it sounds fantastic.

I think you must try the Royal Bengal Airlines based in Bangladesh, which is still has a way to go to provide its low-budget credentials. It was founded to provide an alternative to the steep ticket prices of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and looks set to deliver on its promise with a team of British Bangladeshi professionals, businessmen and aviation experts behind it. It offers direct flights from London to airports in Sylhet and Dhaka, Royal Bengal Airlines intends to widen its net in the future and serve destinations around Asia. sorry but a) this is advertising and b) you would have to drug me to get me on this airline.....

My husband will not let us fly on Air India, Jet Airways, King fisher or any other Indian carriers at the moment. Pilots if you want to call them that are being busted for not having proper training or licences!!! Oh and it's not just the Indians fudging paperwork either it's also the expats with low time saying they're ****** experts!!!

Princess, its green, beautiful and just amazing.. It's entirely opposite what UAE is! The area in on the banks of river Beas and as i write i can hear the sound of gushing river in my head! oh! i miss home! :( There are lot of things to do around the town. The town itself is small but crowded but just 1 km away from the town and it's quiet and nice. You can do river rafting, river crossing (on rope) etc or you can trek. Depending upon how much time you have you can visit other towns/cities in the state. The entire state is well connected by road. Shimla, Dharamshala are other cities and travelling distance is abt a night's journey and each of these cities are very well connected to Delhi. It's primarily hindu, but you will find beautiful Buddhist temples & churches there. Most tour operators organize trekking tours etc and they take ppl in groups. You can join one of the groups if you want. It's safe as long as it's a big group and make sure the shop is in the market and doesn't look too sidey. If you staying in a hotel, they usually have tie -ups etc with operators. You will find many foreigners backpacking in the region. For accommodation, you will find everything there, from big hotels to B&Bs. From my experience of roaming around in the state B&B's are the best bet. They are basic but very clean, and very easy on pocket too! I can suggest you the names if you want. Manali is abt 60 kms from there but it takes about 2 hrs to travel because of the curve-y and narrow rads. There are local buses every 5 mins in the day. It's as crowded as a tourist place can get but Old Manali is good for various eating joints, staying etc. There are lots to see around.. i can go on and on.. Have a look into tripadvisor.com it has plenty of info.. drop me a message if you want to know something specific.. my mail id is cosmic dot woman82 at gmail dot com

Thanks Presam - am actually going to a Yoga retreat in Ropa Village, near Bajaura. But thinking of going a few days early as it looks amazing in that area - really green which is a complete novelty from here. Are there lots of things to do? Is it easy to get hold of walking guides etc and would you recommend doing this sort of thing alone. Are there lots of nice accommodation there or is it a bit basic (Dubai Princess) Also - am presuming as this is quite far north that it's mainly a Muslim area - is that right? Any info would be great as i haven't got round to getting a travel guide.

I'm from Kulu and have flown by both kingfisher & air india in that sector. It's expensive because kulu is the only airport in that touristy region and the aircrafts are small because the airport is by the river side and in a valley. It's a beautiful flight i must tell you that. Kingfisher and air india both are priced almost the same, sometimes one is cheaper, sometimes the other. There are no trains to that side of the state. There are a/c buses, volvos etc from Delhi that are from Himachal State transport, HImachal Tourism and from private operators etc. Most of these are night buses that is they start from Delhi around 5 pm and you will reach Kulu around 8 am. It is very safe for a lady to travel alone, I have done it numerous times. There are other options availale too. You can take flight from delhi to chandigarh and then by bus, it will cut 5 hrs from your journey but again the flight prices will be around 3k. Let me know if you need any help. My parents are in Kulu, they will be happy to help! :)

I have flown Air India & its a good airline other than some flight delays that I faced. Air Arabia & now Indigo, both budget airlines also fly out of Dubai, to some Indian cities. Regards your question on safety, its best not to travel alone although trains are normally safe. Avoid going alone in cars through long distances.

it's perfectly safe to go to Delhi to Kulu by train :) I'm Indian and travel by the rail lines all the time :) will save u a pretty penny and all u need is a good book and headphones to block out the noise! in terms of airline, Air India is the national carrier so is quite decent... don't expect first class service but they can get u from A to B safely and in time :) sometimes that's all that matters (especially for short haul)... Air India and Kingfisher are the only airlines that fly direct from Delhi to Kulu and out of these two Air India would definitely be the slightly cheaper option... all the best :)
