Is anyone here a member? Have you been to a meeting or a meet-and-greet? I was recently told about this organization from an acquaintance I met that does some consulting work for United Airlines.

It looks interesting but with it being summer (did I move during the worst time or what?!?!) there are no regular meetings or meet-and-greets until September/October, so in the meantime, I thought I would ask around here!

I'm from PA, never lived in any other state! Ironically, despite moving to the other side of the world, never made it around America much outside of the east coast. im from PA to.. and never lived anywhere else .. only stayed on east cost then moved here 3 years ago :) What part of Pa you from ? Hey yea....Pittsburgh here though Michigan for the summer. I'm born & raised Pittsburgh here, went to college near Erie and after college/before Dubai lived in Philadelphia (where I really consider "home" in PA) for about 4+ years. Going back for a quickie to Pitts & NYC this October and SO looking forward to some autumn weather and Halloween fun (& Primanti's!!!!)! As for people not hearing of this place, OMG when I first moved here 4 years ago, really truly (western) PA people had not heard of it. For the longest time my mom would come across people (as did I) who would correct her for mispronouncing "DuBois", PA as most people assumed that's where she meant I was moving! Hah, not quite... People don't seem as clueless about Dubai anymore though. I was born and raised in Philly... Never left till i moved here :) and i get the same thing when i say i live in Dubai ..

I remember back before my husband and I were even married and he was working in Iraq, he always flew through Dubai to get home on his vacations. I asked him once where Dubai was and he said "I think it is an island south of Europe" lol Generally speaking he is horrible with geography anyway... but like a lot of people I had never even heard of this place. That's funny! Travel and Dicovery have Dubai shows on frequently so it's up and coming. ps, you have mail....

Yum... Just got my Target popcorn and Icee yesterday while shopping there. I miss that place! I'm home for Ramadan but will be back in Dubai in late August and would love to meet up with y'all at an AWA coffee. I'm in the Ranches and they have one monthly at Shakespeare's Hey Sun..I'm over in Layan :-)

AMK you would be surprised! When I'm back here people constantly ask about Dubai when I say that's where I live. I've been back since June and Dubai is constantly on cable channels. Im from Michigan and back September 2nd. Laurelm...I was born in PA and have lots of family still there!

Oooh, an Icee would be so perfect in this weather! I would put on at least 10 lbs, though, if I had them readily available because that's all I would want to drink! laurelm, I think you have more than made up for not seeing most of the US by moving 7,000 miles away to a place that most people in the US probably couldn't find on a map!!! lol I haven't been to Shakespeare's yet (there are so many things I have to do!!! I need to start making a list!) but these AWA events sound really great -- and I do love my coffee! (and Icees!) That sounds fabulous, I definitely think we should all meet up.

Yes i would love to meet up also and am planning to become a member of the AWA. Was just at Shakespeare's this morning actually for the first time. Do you know what day/time the coffee mornings are? Let us know when you get back so we can all plan to meet there.

Charlotte -- not too far from G'ville! My brother lives there -- he moved after he finished grad school so we would go all the time.

I've been here almost 4 years and have yet to attend an AWA event but truly want to! I also have yet to meet many fellow American women which I'd love to do. I'm back in the US for summer if anyone needs anything from Target ;) edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 23/07/2012 Oh, how I miss Target!!!!

It's to the point that I think my accent is softening and people are beginning to assume I'm English upon meeting me. It's weird; I'd like to get around more Americans.

As an AWA member, I encourage all of you to sign up for one of the Summer Gals events. New people join in at virtually every event. Summer Gals is not limited to AWA members. It's a very welcoming group; we all know how it feels to be new and not know anyone. Check out the EW coffee mornings as well. They are held in different parts of the city and all expats are welcome. Oh, and welcome to Dubai! edited by icecat on 23/07/2012

I forwarded the email to you that I received from them! I'm definitely planning on attending one of the general meetings and one of the meet & greet meetings, if you're thinking on it -- let me know! I *may* even do one of the "summer gal" events, if I am feeling outgoing & adventurous enough.
