Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any of you would know of a specialist sports shoe shop where they do a "treadmill-running video test" using treadmills, cameras and other methods that purport to help find the right shoes to match a runner's physiology.

My husband is a marathon runner and he's unable to find the right running shoes here in the UAE.

Thanks,
Ruby

I haven't found a shop that does this - it's quite difficult to find competent staff that can tell you more about the difference in sneakers beyond color and price. I did a gait analysis at the Up and Running clinic in Jumeirah. They hooked me up to some machines, video taped me running, did some exercises to examine my form and technique, etc. He was able to give me advice on shoes and confirmed what I'm using (Asics Kayano) is right for me feet. Obviously this isn't a free service though and they go into a lot of detail. I found it very beneficial to understand the causes of my various running injuries. I have extreme overpronation but he didn't advise me to get orthotics and instead taught me exercises and stretches to improve my form. Since your husband is a marathon runner, he would already be aware of his pronation and what kind of technique he has (heel strike, mid-foot strike?), so that's a good starting point. I prefer a lot of support but the growing trend is barefoot and minimalist running. Knowing which brands carry those, he can shop around at those stores to find someone knowledgeable. I went through several brands of running shoes before I settled with Asics. Generally, I see more long-distance runners wearing Asics, Brooks, Newton, Saucony, or New Balance. edited by Sakhifa on 28/10/2014
