We tend to use Star Alliance companies for airmiles and so go to Athens using Turkish Airlines, via Istanbul. Last time we did that, on the way back, we were able to have a few days' stopover in Istanbul at no extra charge, which was nice. I can't remember the details, we always get the cheapest option, which usually means travelling at night, which I dislike anyway. Quite a long wait at Istanbul Airport on the way out, I think.

Emirates were sooo expensive when I was booking my flights before. I opted for Royal Jordanian airlines via Amman/Jordan. The fligth times were great, enough time to get off, walk around Duty Free, read my book and have a coffee then time to board again. There is not a lot to do at Amman though, so take a good book, some music etc. The service on board was far better than Emirates, the food was better but there was no TV on the Amman to Athens leg. I didnt mind as I was so tired anyway from staying awake all night before the trip, I just slept, ate and slept : ). Save yourself a few 1000 AEDs and opt for www.rj.com! looked just now, and gulf air, etihad, qatar, egypt air and even Emirates are cheaper then Royal Jordanian, lol will keep an eye on them and wait for special offers Are there others Im missing? Royal Jordanian is FAB for going to Spain though, last time I went I did KLM to Ams then back to Barcelona, Royal Jordanian a much better option. edited by Purple on 17/08/2011

Not regularly but I'm here now :) Flew Gulf Air as it was the cheapest. Very smooth journey, good connection time in Bahrain. Leaves Dxb early in the am, arr Ath 2pm. Coming back, leaves Ath 3pm arr Dxb about 10pm I think, so no middle of the night at either end. Not the plushest of planes or the best of food but can't complain for the price :)

thanks, we just went with Qatar, and they are one of the few who will book including our connection from Athens and price is ok, but to be honest, the airport with all the buses with 2 small kids is just not ideal, and they messed up with my DD's meal and she got nothing to eat apart from a banana on the way home so Im holding a grudge, lol. Looks like we are getting a house over there so will need to find a good airline and stick to the same one so we can earn airmiles.

Emirates is the most convenient but also the most expensive. Qatar Airways has good connections and usually quite competitive rates. I haven't tried any others but I have heard that Etihad is reasonable, especially if they have offers available, and I believe Air Arabia from Sharjah is the cheapest of them all. Gulf Air may be an option too. IMO it doesn't make sense to fly via places other than Doha or Bahrain, except perhaps Turkey if you happen to be going to the north of Greece.
