We are looking for a cheap/close by getaway in March and were recommended Sri Lanka, specifically the South West. Has anyone been recently? We will be with our 2 years old so as long as there is a beach she will be happy :)

All recommendations and advise greatly appreciated! We dont want backpacking cheap and happy to pay a bit more on the hotel because the flights seem to be reasonably priced!

You could check out MihinLanka, Sri Lanka's budget airlines. DXB <-->CMB. Flew with them twice, overall ok as it's only 4.5 hr flight. Their prices are AED 980 (inclusive of taxes), slightly more for weekend flights. Cheers!

Ok Kelly - you seem to be the expert here ;) 1 - 10 for Sri Lankan Airlines, as there flights times suit us best? well i got bumped to business on the way there ( i was the ONLY woman on the flight apart from the crew - not joking) and that was great. economy on the way back was absolutely fine. it's not a long flight, really. food was ok, entertainment not bad. it's not emirates (my favourite) but at twice the cost, emirates can bore off!

i flew sri lankan airlines from dubai. much much cheaper than emirates - flight times not brilliant though. i think air arabia flies there now too? Hi - I thought AA only flies from Sharjah? That's what it looks like on website(I'll check again). Have you flown them before, are they ok? Esp for a 6 hour flight. I'll look at SL from Dubai! Thanks yes AA is from Sharjah - i live in downtown so this is really easy for me. i LOVE AA!

Hey Pollydxb, I've been to Sri Lanka a few times in the last one year. Flown Emirates once and FlyDubai the other times, which arrives approximately 1.30am. It's a **** time, I know. But what my friend and I ended up doing was simply rent a car and drive down to Bentota ( down South - stayed in the Taj Samudra). Took us three hours to get there and we napped along the way. And the hotel staff were kind enough to check us in at 5am and not charge us for the extra hours. As Sri Lanka's main highway is also its only main road within the city, its advisable to cover distances at night to save yourself from sitting in traffic for hours. The second time, we went up North to Anuradhapoora using the same theory. Hope this helps. Cheers xx

Thanks for the info on this thread. Can any one advise, if there a good airline that goes from Dubai, other than Emirates - who flight times doesn't suit us at all. All Etihad flights actually seem to be run by Sri Lankan airline, which are offering good prices and flight, but they are from AD.

That would be great SemiSaudi, who are you flying with? Etihad! They were the same price as Air Arabia and almost 1000 cheaper than Emirates. I think we paid 1300 each for the return flight to Colombo. I think Sri Lankan airways is around the same but it would hardly be Etihad standard. What about you?
