Bonjour Mesdames,
This is the first time i post anything but it's been fun reading all the thread over the last couple of yrs. Today I am in need of some help for my little boy.
My DS (5) was recently diagnosed as being asthmatic and has a wide range of allergies incluing acarians. So far he has been using his old cot-bed hypoallergenic duvet, which we brought with us from London, but he has now totally outgrown it. For the past 2 months I have been trying to find a single bed hypoallergenic duvet, without any success. We've had to replace his duvet with blankets as the nights are chilly and this is triggering repeated asthma attacks. I have tried Mothercare, M&S, Debenhams, Ikea, Babyshop, and even Waitrose, in the vain hope they'd have some John Lewis products. Drew a blank. Does anyone know if there is ANYWHERE here where I can buy hypoallergenic bedroom items. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your replies ladies. My little one suffers also from Eczema, as my father does. This was however very effectively treated back home (France) by a doctor who advised me to wash him with only either Alep soap or Mustella Stelatopia and hydrate his skin with a cream called Dexeryl, which you cannot find here unfortunately so we're having brought over anytime someone comes to visit. It's worked wonders. I remember when he was little it was so bad that both his ears lobes had split away from his face. As for the asthma, it really knocked me out when he was diagnosed as I still to this day remember how much i suffered as a kid from it. However so much progress has been made since my time (like another poster i was on ventolin and nasal spray, as well as weekly injections to try and reduce my allergies), that I hope he'll learn to cope with it. With regards to the hypoallergenic items, for me they are, if anything else, precautionary measures. If it helps reduce the asthma and as far as I'm concern it did, then it's good. I dont believe they are the cure to asthma but if it can help him breathe better at not, I'm all for it. I'll certainly never forget the endless nights spent sleeping sat up in bed!!!!!! Same goes for not having anymore carpets in the house, or the whole house being vacuumed and cleaned every day, and making sure he does plenty of exercice to work up those lungs. But I agree Asthma is a tricky disease as it can also be psychosomatic, not just allergy based.

Asthma is one of those strange things, I had it all my life with eczema and allergies I was on Ventolin and nothing for the allergies back then, just suffered. One day I turned 16 and everything vanished. Its tough, feel sorry for your poor little chap. My eczema and mild version of Asthma returned when I fell pregnant with my little girl. From experience (re dust allergy) is that those mattress and pillow protectors really do work. They help, even if just a little, but when your small and itching like mad, even a small relief is worth it. Good luck, hope you find them. Just as a last resort, I bought my allergy mattress protector from C4. Its double, but I was just thinking if all else fails, buy a double and just tuck it around the single bed. Could work.

OK, really confused. My DS has just been diagnosed asthmatic and allergic. Was told by the consultant only last week that: 1. Ventolin is not recommended for under 12's (so was given an alternative) and 2. Research has shown that hypoallergenic duvets have no proven benefits, so spend your money if you wish, will do no harm, but have no proven benefits. Is anyone else receiving this version?

Thank you so much. I'll be heading down to that shop first thing tomorrow. I really feel for you, reading all the medication you're taking reminded me of my childhood: I was a heavy asthma sufferer and it suddenly stopped when i reached puberty. Unfortunately it seems to have been passed on my little one, who at the moment is on Ventolin and Singulair (which has been fantastic, shame it didn't exist when i was a kid). We have quite a good doctor at Medcare, she's very thorough. I will however keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Moustique As a fellow sufferer I can completely empathise. this climate is not good at all for asthmatics as the humidity, air conditioning and dust play havoc with my asthma and allergies. There is a bedding shop in Burjuman Centre (its next door to swarovski, sorry I cannot remember the same, they sell luggage as well) and we got our hypoallergenic bedding from there. You may find buying one in the UK and getting a family member to send it to you the only option-expensive I know but necessary. Also, in case you have yet to find a good asthma doctor here, I have seen many and the best by far was Dr Mina at Dubai London Clinic on the Beach Road. the combination of meds she has given me more or less controls my asthma now with few flare ups. I now take singulair, atarax, ventolin, symbicort, xyzal and nasonex daily and have rarely needed to go back on prednisolon.
