The atlas spinal centre has now closed. Best places for spine and pain issues in DHCC are American Spine Centre ( ask for Dr. Hasnain Haider-Shah, honestly the very best there) or Westminster Ortho Med clinic which has two spine pain specialists.

Dear All, please do not forget the great Dorn Method upon your bad back pain problems!! Elisabeth in JLT (Body Balancers) did a great job on my neck, where I was suffering as well from too much pain for ages!! I've done only 5 Sessions with her, my headaches disappeared after the second session and haven't come back at all, also my neck pain has completely gone!! She is very much professional and is convincing with the treatment itself rather then "talking" it through like others. She also has the longest experience in the Method here in Dubai. I've send 3 of my friends also to her with all different issues and all are fine by now!! She really does miracles. Monica

I recommend the Atlas Spinal center in DHCC, in fact I cannot recommend them highly enough. I suffered from 10 years of back pain following a bad fall. In the last few years I also developed quite debilitating hip pain and then in the last year leg weakness. After years of on and off unsuccessful treatment (in the long term) I went there. They diagnosed that all the problems were in fact coming from my neck, which had thrown my spine out of line resulting in spinal curvature, distorted pelvis and shortening of one leg. In the past I have been told it was many things - mostly disc degeneration. The X- rays they took of my neck and spine showed the problems clearly (funnily enough no-one had done them before - only MRI's). Within two sessions of painless treatment most of my symptoms had eased. Now at the end of my treatment and I have no problems whatsoever. The two doctors are both from the USA - trained chiropractors and are lovely. The initial consultation involved a very detailed history, physical exam and X rays - they are very thorough. I see Dr Katie Henery, she is fantastic, warm, friendly and excellent at what she does. I initially saw the guy who set the clinic up (Dr Finnegan) but he has gone back to the US and has been replaced by a guy who is equally as nice. In fact everyone in the clinic is so warm and welcoming it is a pleasure to go there. The clinic is on the ground floor of the Al Razi building in block E. Tel 04 451 8877 ETA - They initally said that my problem was so bad that it would be a challenge to treat, but they have cured it. It is wonderful to be pain free and able to walk properly again! edited by Genie on 26/07/2012 I second that! My mother had reached a point where she would cry every night from severe pain, until she met Dr. Katie, and now she's doing very well hamdilla! Atlas Spinal center have been a great help in my parents recovery!

Thank you so much for all your replies...DH is a little better...able to walk slowly and sit for little while ...pain in leg still there but going higher up in the leg which the doc says is a good sign! surgery is still not ruled out though...! fjcruiser..i called for an app with Dr Masaddi ...and he is available in February! imagine that...although if it comes to surgery i would like to have him as our Dr...so thank you for ur reply and ur idea of the cost estimate also helped..... have an appointment with Dr Catalin at Neurospinal on thursday ...will at least get his opinion have been reading good things about Dr Amr Sarwat at City hospital here on expat woman..so now thinking maybe no harm in getting his opinion too... Would still like to add for general info that Dr Charles Jones has so far been a miracle worker and has brought DH to this level where at least he has regained some level of activity... May all of you never need a doctor and be healthy and happy...amen! Dr Catalin is in Dr Msaadi's team. I saw him first and then he referred me straight away to Dr Msaadi although when I first called like you I was told 4 months waiting! The hospital reception should explain that it is ok to see Dr Catalin (he is great btw and is doing my 3 months check ups) and that he is not an alternative to Dr Msaadi but part of his team! Dr Catalin and Dr Msaadi jointly operated on me. Hope it makes things clearer. <em>edited by fjcruiser on 10/09/2012</em>

Hi Slakhani, a friend of a friend recently went to Cyprus to have an op on their back, the surgeon was American, and apparently, he received first class treatment wonderful hospital in Nicosia he said. It seems as though many people are flying in especially from the USA as the healthcare costs in the states are so expensive and as they still receive treatment from a US surgeon they are very happy to make the journey. Hope this helps, good luck.

Dear ladies... I will be really obliged if some body can advise me on my situation... My DH suffered a slip disc around 15 days back..he has 2 of them one small one between L4 and L5 and one major one between L5and S1...the lower one is pressing on the sciatica nerve which is causing major pain so much so that he can barely walk ...only to the loo and back and is mostly lying down... Now ive been following this thread since DH's issue started..and read about all various recommendations.....we have gone to Dr Charles Jones the chiropractic...he is doing spine decompression therapy...but on our second visit today he told us that a fragment of the disc seems to have broken off which is now pressing on the nerve ....we will continue with the therapy for 1 week but if there is no drastic improvement we will have to go for surgery to remove that fragment. He advised us that if it comes to surgery the best doctors were available at AI MIS (American institute of minimally invasive spine surgery) in Cyprus....he said these are all American doctors and best in the world..............in Dubai he only suggested Dr Msaddi at Neuro Spinal Jumeirah and one other at Dubai Bone and Joint Centre. The Cyprus stint would cost us around 20,000 $ ....it’s just an idea which Dr Jones gave.. Would love it if anybody could share their personal experience with Dr Msaddi, how much it costed? Just for a general idea of course.....and if any body has ever gone to the Cyprus hospital which Dr Jones recommends...(I really respect him...he sorted out my back pain although not major and a friend has gone to him for years and recommends him highly) Any comments/advice highly appreciated! TIA.. PS: I think Expat Woman is a great blessing ...reading about all u guys out there has given me so much hope and often direction as well. Love u all I had my surgery done at the Neuro Spinal Hospital by Dr Msaadi and is team.He is a very experienced surgeon and will only do surgery if surgery needs doing. He has a great reputation in Dubai but at times it can be difficult to get an appointment with him. Fortunately for me, it was all done on insurance. The cost was about 40,000dhs and I have 3 months check ups (I was operated on the L4-L5 disc 6 months ago). The sciatica pain went immediately and the recovery has been going very well. I am just left with some numbness which is normal and is decreasing and should be gone within a year. I highly recommend the Neuro Spinal Hospital (not one of the most modern hospital but the care was fantastic).

Given the pain you are saying your DH is in even the thought of flying would be too much and certainly would be very uncomfortable. From personal experience, I had problems with L5/S1 with the sciatic nerve being pinched earlier this year and was in excruciating pain, unable to sit for more than a few minutes for minutes, so I know what your DH is going through. I would strongly recommend Dr Amr Sarwat at City Hospital, he performed a microsisectomy and relief was great. As many surgeons will do, he tried the epidural to relieve the pain in the first instance but when that didn't work surgery was performed within days and such a relief to wake with no back pain. Then worked with hard with the physio's there and am all recovered no, so much so had not a twinge when hill walking recently for 8hours! Dr Sarwat also performed a c4/C5 disc replacement for me 2years ago, again from which I went from weeks of excruciating disabling pain to pain free upon waking from the surgery. Agree with RuthM re making your own opinion re who to see, it doesn't matte what others say, DH has to feel that the surgeon is the one for him. Ask if you can speak to other patients for their eperiences with the doc, although I didn't I just knew he was the man for the job for me. I've been asked to speak to patients following both surgeries, even met one lady while still in hospital this time. I hope your DH finds relief soon, take care

I don't know much but Cyprus seems like a bit of a random place to have spinal specialists. I normally stick to London as my family who were all in medical professions themselves have always told me that any good surgeon would want to at least stay connected to a big London NHS hospital even if 90% of his work is private as they are teaching hospitals and they get some of the most interesting cases and have regular meetings with other doctors to discuss cases etc. There is a place in Munich where I know someone (a full time athlete) who had endoscopic surgery on their disc and was very pleased with the results and recovery time. However it may be best to do some research as one persons opinion is not enough for something as important as a spine! http://www.apex-spine.com/endoscopic-disk-surgery-lumbar-spine.html

Before doing anything else, talk to Louise or Jose at the Manchester clinic in Jumeriah. Slipped disc/ herniated disc, look up www.piddds.com.Nothing painful is done to you. But if your hips are not level or scoliosis is part of the problem then this is a fantastic non surgical method to effectively gain back the space between your vertebra, correct leg length and pelvic. The space between the vertebra will slowly elongate. The great thing is it is a great non surgical option. Today I helped another friend by helping her through the logical non strenuous movements to straighten up, correct the leg length and pelvic imbalance and the shoulder girdle imbalance in an hour. Tomorrow I will see her again to follow up and show her how to do the movements on her own, and also check that her new balance has stayed, but also repeat with her everything that was done today and releive any tightness that may have developed with a short massage and heat therapy.

You should have the sciatic pain checked. My understanding is the sciatica pain should have gone after the op.I had my surgery like yours end of February for the same problem at the NeuroSpinal Hospital with Dr Msaadi. I had constant sciatica for the 4 months before surgery and a numb leg. The sciatica pain has totally gone, there is still numbness but that is normal and can last up to a year. I have regular 3 months check ups and I am fine as I have had never been before. I do not want to alarm you but please go and have it checked.

Hi Mai Tai - i hope you have recovered well. do you mind updating us on your experience please? my husband has a suspected disc problem...thanks Hi sorry this is a few months late...I had to have emergency surgery in February (any time longer and my bladder and bowel function could have gone) - Dr. Shunnar Kazim and another Dr. had a look at the MRI and advised the surgery. The disc had bulged badly, ruptured, bits floating in the spine fluid, legs numb coz nerve no space left...I was sh... scared but Dr. Kazim was GREAT - he's just so good at what he does. Spent 3 nights in AH - obviously not feeling so great straight after and a few weeks of not driving or excerting myself (which is difficult with no maid and 2 small DS...!) Healed fairly quick. Now, on the negative side, still having sciatic pain but it's bearable. Better when I do Physio (not done any during summer).

Ladies, it's very individual and will depend on which side your disc is "slipping". Mine slips toward my back, so a deep bending movement such as in forward fold will cause the disc to "slip" further back, while bending backwards is considered beneficial, I was told. Not wanting to aggravate my condition more I started doing all positions which require deep forward bending with my knees slightly bent, as well as paying more attention to bending my knees when I pick up kids or heavy objects. But please talk to your doctor, do an MRI and find the exact root of your backache. The worst you can do is start self-treatment and end up doing more harm. Be kind to yourselves!

After years of increasing pain and numerous doctor visits I finally saw Dr. Ahmed Mansour at Emirates Hospital in Dubai Marina who diagnosed me with a slipped disc. He was fantastic in his explanations of the problem and treatment options. I never had a doctor sit with me and go over everything in such detail. Apparently I've been doing more damage with one simple yoga pose (who would think yoga can cause more harm?), so he advised me which movements to avoid. All in all a great doctor, can't recommend him highly enough. Good luck and I hope you'll find a right treatment for your pain.

Irooni, I feel your pain as have suffered similarly for many months this year. Dr Sarwat, spinal surgeon at City, following 2 epidural's performed a micro disectomy on my lower disc, this was followed with physio at City with Laura and Fran who between them all and my following their exercises am no longer in pain, can sit, stand and walk freely again. Fran gave me insight into basic core Pilates which I need to do daily to maintain snd build on the strength for my lower back. Fran also does needling which helps to kick start stubborn muscles. Unfortunately, Dr Sarwat is away back just before Eid I believe, saying that I first saw Dr Opitz at City the Ortho doctor, who is here at the moment, and he could tell straight off what was wrong and organised the MRI and referred me to Dr Sarwat. Wishing you well and pain free soon.

Havn't read all your post, but wanted to suggest maybe you try Bikram yoga. I fractured my tailbone several years ago, and it's been getting alot worse since I gave birth. I could hardly stand from a sitting position. My friend suggested I try Bikram after trying, physio, Doctors etc, without any success. Must admit the first few classes killed me, but after two weeks, I havn't had any pain in my back for the first time in nearly a year. I'm amazed. Might be worth a try?

Genie i don't think it was a communication problem. I got the contract several times explained from different persons, got it home, etc. I do understand what is the condense but if i will go individual it will work out cheaper for me. As Finnegan advised a max of 5 sessions are sufficient and i show up and sweet Katie is insist in 20 sessions and after discussion 10 are also fine. I'm asking my self where are the individual plans for every patient. Katie lied to me several times and I'm able to prove that. The Arab lady confessed (in Arabic to my husband) that Finnegan left because the new management of the clinic implemented new rules (contracts which needs to be signed to make more profit). End of the story my doctor at DBAJ will not transfer any patient to them after he confirmed my story with other Arab patients which complaint about the same things. Maybe communications problems as well???? (by the way communication problems is the favorite excuse of Katie) I'm happy that you are had a different experience but I spend lot of money at the center for nothing.

I recommend the Atlas Spinal center in DHCC, in fact I cannot recommend them highly enough. I can't recommend them at all. I got transfered from Dubai Bone and Joint Center (DBAJ) to them, specially to Mr. Finnegan as my Doc of DBAJ doesn't trust in Dr. Katie. Scenario began with organizing the appointment. The Arab Lady from the reception informed me that Finnegan has left for vacation (I knew after my first visit that i was a lie) but i could make a new appointment with the new doctor but he wouldnt be licensed at the moment but is already working !!!! (I assume its illegal to work without license anyway). I refused to make any appointment. Again my Doc of DBAJ convinced me to try it as the treatment would finally release me from my back pain. He insured me to talk in person to the center and check all details with Dr. Katie. Ok - 2 days later i had my first appointment at the center with Dr. Katie. She advised that nobody of DBAJ give her my details and nobody was talking to her, even when i saw my medical reports + x-rays of DBAJ in my file. x-rays, first treatment with the machine done and directly after the treatment my back pain increased. She explained that is normal and it will go after i will take a rest at home. My pain increased dramatically, i wasn't able to move properly, cried from pain. My DH called Dr. Katie and she was speechless and couldn't explain the reaction but i should continue my treatment with them. Next day the pain got lesser. Second visit at Atlas Spinal Center Dr. Katie didn't answer any of my questions regarding the my pain. Her comment were: Everybody is different, so there could be pain. Strange that she didn't inform me about that before my first treatment. Discussion continued if i would be interested to continue the treatment which is very important because of my problem with my atlas i need to sign up a contract with them for 20sessions for only 19xxx AED (it was almost 20.000 AED). I refused because first i wanted an explanation for my pain. She continued talking and talking that 10 session for 8900 AED would be ok for the moment and then we will see. I refused again. In the end the new doctor came to convince me that I MUST sign. No luck. In the end the manager Terry showed up as I'm a Dubai Resident i MUST sign and its a MUST in there regulations . I explained that first i want to get proper explanation and then i will check with my health insurance regarding the treatment costs . He almost forced me to sign the paper as otherwise i wouldn't be able to see Dr. Katie again. I went back to DBAJ to talk to my doctor there and he explained me that with the whole thing is fishy. He transfered several patients to Atlas Spinal Center before and none of them ever had to sign a contract, all of them got treated with 2-7 sessions. The treatment might be is successful but I will not return to Atlas Spinal Center anymore after all whats happened. Sounds for my like moneymaking rather than a honest treatment. I signed up for the course of treatment, without any pressure, it cost 16000 and was and is worth every fils. After 10 years of constant back pain, hip pain and developing leg weakness it has now all been resolved. I did a lot of research before signing up for the treatment as well as having a long consultation with Dr Finnegan and Dr Katie where they explained everthing in detail. The consultation was automatically given before any treatment began. The explained that I could sign up for a course or pay for individual sessions as I went along. As I knew my case was complicated and would probably involve a lot of treatment I signed for the course as it would work out cheaper . 5 months later all my treatment is still covered by the initial payment - consultations, muscle work, treatment with the machine and x rays etc. Dr Katie did explain to me that initially I may have more pain as the muscles fought the new alignment - muscle memory meant that they would be used to being in a certain position. I have had times in the first few treaments where I did get some muscle spasms but as I was being seen every other day they were sorted out within 24 hours. I was also told if I experienced anything that was a problem to come straight back and not wait for the next appointment. I am sorry you had that experience -sounds like a communication problem, in my case I was given all the information clearly and knew what to expect. Dr Katie even phoned me at home after my first treatment to see how I was. I can only speak from my experience but for me they have changed the quality of my life for the better. Also I have spent far more money than that in the last 10 years - to no avail, a lot of it on MRI's that failed to diagnose the origin of the problem. <em>edited by Genie on 27/07/2012</em>
