Thankfully, the bearer was smart enough to sign the back of the cheque. Phew. Still don't want to waste a trip to the bank only to find out that they won't encash it even with an authorization letter. Thanks for the reply KB100

I tried to cash a cheque the other week and the bank wouldn't accept it without the signature of the bearer on the back of the cheque so had to treck all the way back to the company to get a signature on the back. Had cashed cheques before and this wasn't require so guess it is a new thing.

Thanks for the reply BuckeyD. So, to deposit it's not a problem. But to encash over the counter? Didn't really notice if the cheque had the A/C Payee part on it or the 2 lines on the upper corner... hmmm... I googled the same question as well, but the only thing that came up was deceased, divorced, separated spouse. All of which don't apply to me.

The weird thing here, as I understand it, is that unless it is "crossed," meaning some mysterious two-line marking written in the upper left corner, and the words "A/C payee only" written, then anyone can cash it! I have taken many of my husband's checks (albeit for deposit, never tried to cash them) for deposit into an account with just his name. They don't have anyone sign them on the back here, which is just so weird to me. Your situation is a bit different, now that I'm typing, but I'm thinking you can do it.

Hi ladies. Does anyone have any experience with encashing a cheque that is named to your spouse? Is it possible if there is a written authorization letter? Thanks heaps.
