perhaps also look into the free legal clinic at the DIFC courts? I hear they try to mostly stay within the DIFC corporate legal system, but they do often receive demands for other type of legal advice and have a great network of pro-bono or non practicing (often wife or husband with legal training but who took time off to raise kids) lawyers that they might be able to match you with.
Hey not sure if this applies for UK law, but some western country, if you divorce under the law of another country while being a resident there, then the law of the place of divorce applies (eg, under Canadian law, 2 Canadians that have permanently left Canada and are resident in Dubai if obtaining a divorce in the UAE would have UAE matrimonial law apply to the divorce proceeding, despite neither of them being emirate or Muslim). Obviously there's loopholes and ways around to make sure this would not apply, but just wanted to remind you to double check all of this for the UK if divorcing in the Middle East (especially if you have children, considering family law here is quite different).
Sorry to hear about your tough time, and I hope you can find a great lawyer to help you keep it as simple as possible.
Sorry ladies, I saw a lady in the past that posted a divorce or divorce lawyer for AED 6500 only... any idea about reasonable lawyers, please.
The husband is not talking much to me or our child those days and I feel like I better find a lawyer soon... all the lawyers I quoted charged AED 20000+
Thanks so much for the support ladies. Definitely woman feel very vulnerable in UAE regarding the finances and children. Yes,I'm feeling a bit scared of court proceedings but had to go down there and speak to someone about opening a case and they reassured me that a man has a obligation to provide for his children in this country and the mother has custody until child is 11. my son is only 5. So I'm taking a chance this week and going back today to talk again. Wish me luck, please
Nathalie-Thanks, I found the organization on the December post.
Emmsie- I'm not from UK, but already checked some "divorce online" sites.
So sorry to hear! I can not really help you, but read a story on this forum few days ago about lady who escaped to UK and had an orgaisation who helped her..maybe somebody remembers here?? I forgot it..sorry!
I don't know where you're from and that could make a difference as to where to start divorce proceedings. My best advice, however, would be to protect yourself and your son first. Secondly, UK courts treat mothers extremely well in divorce cases and financial settlements are very generous to the mother if she does not work. My understanding, however, is that if your husband is in the UAE, the rulings of a UK court will not be applied to him by a UAE court when it comes to divorce cases. If you are in the UK, however, he needs to abide by the rulings of the UK court if he wants to see his son, even if he is resident in the UAE. Divorce is a horrible situation for anyone and your situation sounds nastier than most. I hope everything gets sorted out quickly and that you and your little one stay safe and well. Good luck x
Resihun, I am very sorry about your situation. Unfortunately, I don't know a lawyer that could help you, but since your husband is beeing unreasonable, and threatening you, maybe your best bet would be to get out of here as soon as you can if you don't want to lose your boy.... best of luck to you!
Hi,
The husband or soon to be ex is being very unreasonable since we separated 3 months ago and making so many treats to me that i'm being forced to open a court case soon or get out of here. I tried to talk and be amicable but he insists on giving me a very hard hard time. I have a little boy age 5, and would rather try to go to court here. Right now, I do not have much money to spare, so I really hope anyone can recommend an affordable family lawyer.
Did anyone get a divorce in Dubai Courts to tell me more about it, please. My husband is from UK and all I need is to make sure that my child stays with me.
