Communicating between iPhone and Blackberry

Hi ladies - My family and I have just arrived in Dubai from the US. I have an unlocked iPhone that I got a SIM card and Etisilat service for, so I can use it and also need to communicate with my kids.
My kids have Blackberries on the 49 AED plan. I thought I could download Whatsapp on the iPhone to communicate with BBm but I can't get it to work - they can't download the app because it's not included with their plan.
Does this idea of mine just not work and I should get a blackberry too? Or am I missing something? Thank you so much for any advice!

You can get whatsapp on the 49uae plan, as mentioned. I have it on my blackberry. The thing with whatsapp is its connection and dependability is cr*p. I use it to chat with my iphone friends but if you see a little clock once you push send it means it won't send for awhile or the service is down... sometimes it sends a day later. (on my blackberry I can see a clock, although one of my friends with an iphone doesn't see these icons I believe. A green check means it went through, a double green check means it was received and read. It's actually quite handy!) My friends and I just then switch over to text if it's important and the messages aren't going through. I use it when i have wifi or no wifi, but like I mentioned, it's connection is intermittent. Even my iphone friends notice the same from their whatsapp. I don't know if this has to do with Etisalat/Du or what... ETA, I also use it to chat with my sister in Canada, no extra charges that I've noticed, plus we send pictures back and forth. She even sent me a video the other day via whatsapp and it came through perfectly. edited by moose on 05/02/2012

I did some more asking around today... most kids SMS their parents and it costs 1/2 a dirham per text, so you can preload their account That I can do!

DD didn't receive a Whatsapp message from me with her wifi turned off. Facebook Messenger works both ways without wifi connection though.

So that means that I can't really use it then, right? I never got the test message through cell service, only wi-fi. I see my options as 1 - get a blackberry for me to use or 2 - let my younger kids get facebook or 3 - get a more expensive plan? Any other options?

Don't get too excited spongemonkey... I got it to download, took forever to set up, and then sent a msg from blackberry to iphone over wi-fi and it worked... then tried it over etisalat and have not received. Also tried to respond and Blackberry did not receive. Let me know if yours works and maybe I messed something up!

I have an iPhone, DD has a Blackberry on the AED 49 plan from Etisalat. We usually communicate for free through FB. She sends me a FB message and I pick it up through the dedicated FB Messenger app on my iPhone. You can download Whatsapp to a BB on the aed 49 plan - DD did it a few days ago. I've just sent her a message from my iPhone to her BB through Whatsapp and it worked. There are quite a few apps available on the BB with the 49 plan including Twitter, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger and Facebook. Internet is available when hooked up to a wifi connection. There are quite a few other apps and games availab;e through BB App World when on wifi. Can I have specific and simple instructions on how to download Whatsapp , please? ( On the 49 dh plan) Thanks.

OK, that makes sense. Going to find some wi-fi in this hotel and see if I can download Whatapp and make it work. DDs are 9, 11, and 13 and the 2 younger don't have FB so that's not an option. Working on it now! Thanks!

The 49 dh plan does not give your kids Internet connection for anything other than Facebook. You can in theory use FB to message each other but I can't work out how to do it. I can send a message but I can't see where you see them or get any back BUT it could be me! :D
