If it isn't an emergency, ring the insurance company and get his medical number (or even a confirmation of his policy emailed to you) and check what they need for him to make a claim back. Insurance companies 'usually' have free phone international numbers that are always 24 hours. Unless it is an insurer like Bupa who cover here, my guess is that most companies will make him pay upfront and claim back anyway (given you have to do this with a number of local insurers). But you Dad is right, check exactly what he needs to do for the requirements of his insurer, otherwise the company 'could' find an reason to deny his claim, which is fine if it is a little consultation, but if he needs a hospital stay and care, it will be very expensive. It is seriously worth the quick phone call to them to get the details. Hope he is okay.

Shazam is right most policies you will have to pay, and claim back later. We maxed out a credit card a few years back when DH dislocated his shoulder in Florida in fact the cc company had to extend our credit limit to cover all the bills. Got it all back from the insurance company within a month or two.

I know but he is worried he does not have his policy and cant affford to pay privately, i said i would pay i didnt care but he is a stickler old world man i will take him to see my Doc , is it the usual consultation fees i.e. my fee to see doc is 400 but i only pay 10% as my insurance covers the rest? Ask them for a reduced rate, many clinics will do this if they know the patient does not have insurance.

If it's related to previous medical history, I hope he told his insurance company, as he may not be covered if he didn't. Pay with his credit card if he has one and just get all the receipts make sure you also make copies and get him to claim it back when he's back home. If he has a booklet telling him what to do, it may have a number on he can phone, even without his policy number he may be able to give them enough info I.e. Name dob etc to get his policy number from them or they may even be able to email him a copy.

Some insurance policies for holidaymakers are pay and claim back is this the case for your dad. If not use this excuse to get him to the doc. Tell we would have to pay anyway just get him there, you are obviously very worried about him. Hope he comes round for you. With my guest I just took her to the doc filled in some form, name DOB etc, paid full consultation fee, got prescription and paid for required treatment. It was so easy I also was a bit worried but they were fine and so helpful.

Just take him to your usual doctor and pay privately, then see if you can claim it back after. If it is urgent I would not be worrying about insurance policies just get him to a doc. Hope he is feeling better soon. We had a visitor who came with no insurance and she just paid privately at our local health care place.
