I've found a recipe to make date syrup and am going to give it a try. My question is it better nutritionally than golden syrup? And to you domestic goddesses, is it possible to substitute date syrup (home made or bottled) for golden syrup in recipes like flapjacks?

Thanks for that Fairwater, let's hope DH likes the flapjacks with date syrup!

Like whole dates, date syrup contains modest amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, riboflavin, niacin, folate, phosphorus, pantothenic acid, and vitamin B-6. Ounce for ounce, dates contain more potassium than bananas.

Thanks Daza, here is the recipe I'm going to use for home made date syrup Date Syrup serves 2 cups / approx. 280 calories per 1 cup serve approx. macronutrient breakdown: fat 0g / carbs 76g / protein 2g Ingredients  10 Medjool dates, pitted (or 20 normal dates, pitted) 1 3/4 cup water 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice Method Place all ingredients in a blender and process for a few minutes until smooth and completely blended. Start off slowing to allow the dates to break up initially, and then build up the speed. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

I don't know about nutritional value but I often substitute honey/date syrup/malt for golden syrup in flapjacks etc. I much prefer the richer flavours and have never had any problems doing it.
