Ok what would be easier/closer? staying and travelling by car from Farnham, Surrey to North London (near Watford) or staying in London near Aldgate tube station (sorry can't remember the name of the place) and travelling by car to same location just for a 5 day period no fixed timings for travel ?

Shepherd I was in Farnham today!!!! I'd choose to stay there with little ones. You've got bird world to visit and the fantastic Alice holt forest and if the weather is good you could have some lovely picnics at frensham ponds. The m25 does not go o Farnham but get off and onto m3 and it's a pretty easy run. Oooh maybe we might meet up!!!! Happy to help you if you need more info as this is where I hang out!

Ah yes thanks ladies had forgotton completely about the 2012 Olympics, in which case yes outside of London could be a much better idea.... My little ones will be 4.5years and 1.5years... edited by JShepherd on 10/10/2011

I would do the Surrey option personally, as it's only 5 days out of your whole trip (which if I remember is quite a long one for you isn't it). But how old are your kids? If they are old enough to be out in London on their own then I guess the North London option could be a good one as there will be loads for them to do, but I get the impression they are younger, in which case I think probably Surrey has more options for you for your whole trip, and of course you are still very much close enough to London to go and explore the sights too. But I am a Surrey girl, so maybe am a bit biased.... As mrsg said, the roads will be a nightmare around the Olympics, I was in London over the summer when they were practising the roads closures, whereas I imagine the M25 will be kept open at all times? Could be worth having an explore on the TfL website to see if any of your options could be affected by road closures etc.

Remember that travel in London will be a nightmare from 27th July to 12th August. London Olympics :)

The m25 from Watford to Farnham is already completed, the traffic is much better now; I often take the M25 from Watford to Winsor so to Farnham it should only take you about an hour, Friday evenings and Monday mornings being the exception. I can help you further if you want to leave your e mail address; I live in North London and have good contacts for childcare if your still looking for next summer. Aldgate to Farnham will take you 1 hour 20 mins plus you have to factor in traffic in the centre of London before you hit the motorways. I think staying out of London will be much nicer with children, I have linked up places that might be of interest http://www.willowsfarmvillage.com/ http://www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk/search.php?county=hertfordshire edited by tally-ho on 10/10/2011

What time of year are you doing the journey? We did an almost identical route round the M25 to Watford in the summer and the traffic was a nightmare on the M25 because of roadworks. Also the M3 is one busy road - there never seems to be a good time to travel on it. I don't have any experience of driving in North London so I can't advise on that. Thanks, M25 can be a nightmare! I took the trip and it was 1 hour there 2.5 hours back due to traffic so wondering if through London is any better, the same or worse. I will be there July and August next summer.

Thanks pI but I'd like to stay in one place for the entire time as it will be much easier with the little ones, finding childcare, accomodation, getting settled ect...... so I have the possibility of staying in either of the before mentioned, just wondering what that travelling times would be like? If one is better than the other? any Londoners out there??? Just throwing up all ideas at the moment, types of accom ect to see what would be best for us.... I could also have help in either of these places, whereas I don't know Watford and have no accomd... but will have a look anyway to see.....
