Actually, packing is an EXTRA service we are lucky to get when it is available. When I first came to the UAE there were 3 packers per checkout, but over the years they are decreasing as they're probably trying to phase it out, as they are slowly but surely becoming more like other countries. Yes, I'm the first to admit, I like it when there's packer at my counter, and i might choose a checkout which has a packer, I don't take it for granted and if there's not a packer available, there's not a packer available. Its different if someone is standing around doing nothing, but another if they are busy doing something else... the person who encountered the OP sounds like she was being unreasonable, and whether it was due to her just being a rude Bleep or sick in the head is another topic altogether. CorkShelly, kudos to you for holding back some of the more nastier things you may have said/done! I have to agree! Every time I am back home, that first time I go shopping in the local supermarket there, I spend a few seconds waiting, assuming someone will pack my bags, until the cashier barks at me to hurry up so she can ring up the shopping of the next cusomer. Ahhh, home sweet home, where service is rude but honest ; ) Besides that ,I like packing my own bags in the supermarket because that way I know exactly where what is and I will not have the cleaning products (sometimes leaking) together with the bread or similar.

Lazy Lazy Lazy - can't pack their own shopping bags. My very first trip to C4 over five years ago, a local in the next checkout clicked his fingers and shouted 'here boy', the grown man scurried across to him abandoning my bag packing in the middle - I had no objection to packing my own bags but how rude was the local? I thought women had a little more respect - I have since learnt otherwise !

What I find quite interesting with the packers here is when they see a local person, they will drop all your goods and run there to pack coz they get quite nice tips from them. and i have seen locals order the packer around, make them push the trolley to their vehicle, load the groceries into the back, take the trolley back to the trolley zone and click their fingers waiting for the dirham back from out of the trolley. have you ever seen the locals who give the packers a Dh50/100 tip without thinking about it? I bet that is not worth a mention on EW. Never seen it and doubt I ever will.

it is part of their job, agreed and understood. but they are human beings, and they have two hands. they cannot be at every aisle every second of the day waiting for highnesses to show up so they can be at their beck and call. the point is, if you're out of the office on a meeting, how would you feel if you're boss screamed at you (in front of everyone) for not being in to entertain someone who, let's face it, is a donkey's rear. the packer is done for either way. if he doesn't pack the woman's things he gets screamed at. if he doesn't stack trolleys and they are short he gets screamed at. have a heart for these people, there's a long, hot, humid summer to go.

I haven't read everything, just a couple - but, while I think we are capable of putting our bags in the trolley - I do sometimes think that the stores over price things so much that you do pay for these services, but I don't think the people who actually have to do it get paid for the service. I think the store charges us for the service but the employees don't get extra to do it. Basically the fat cat gets 4AED 'service charge' for every person but that doesn't go to the staff, 1AED of it goes to them then he puts 3 in his pocket. So, as I said, we pay for it, but they don't get paid to do it. It is part of their *job*! I don't get extra for things when I work - I do what the job entails!

As an aside, we're going back to the UK for the first time in three years this summer. Have visions of us pulling up at a petrol station and sitting there waiting for somebody to come up to the window of the car and asking 'how many tanks, mamsir?' lol der! Shame on you but know what you mean. Seen it, done it and worn the T shirt!!!! :)

Have found this a fascinating thread as I've been shopping at le Marche about five times a week for almost the last six years. Yes, I've come across this appalling behaviour more times than I care to remember. And I've commented upon it to the person concerned. And I've been berated for doing so. Do I care that I've been berated? Definitely NO! I do my own shopping and am quite capable of loading it from the trolley onto the conveyer belt at the counter and also of packing my own shopping bags. If somebody comes along and helps me to pack my bags then I consider that a bonus and I'll give them a dirham or so and thank them for their help. I noticed in several of the large supermarkets that there is a shortage of packers, either due to cut backs or because they have been allocated to do some other jobs - and I see packers bounce from counter to counter trying to take care of customers. So, for those women who are of the mindset that "packers come with the purchase", if there is a shortage of packers, do you stand still with your purchase in your trolley and ask the person at the register to get you a packer to empty your trolley and pack your purchase because you think it is a service you are paying for? If this woman was mentally ill, how scary that she has a child or children. edited by Crystil on 04/04/2011

The woman was rude to the cashier, packer and the OP. Does this thread really need to be debated? At the end of the day the woman is RUDE, has ideas above her station and probably has a couple of equally revolting brats just like her at home.

I felt very uncomfortable initially having my bags packed by the orange clad packers in our local supermarket (Family Food centre) They put up with so much abuse, clicking fingers and some pampered madams shouting "BOY, over here" complete with the come hither finger movement!! The "boys" were in many cases mature men in their middle years. How dare these stuck up idiots treat fellow human beings like that. Some folk will get a helluva fright when they return to their home countries and actually have to do for themselves again. Agree. I was in a supermarket once and the woman behind me would not even lift her goods out of her trolley to put on the belt. The cashier had to ask the guy who was helping me pack to go and find another packer to take the stuff out of her trolley!!!! Told the cashier and packer not to worry and for the nice guy to help the woman and I would pack my stuff myself. She still didn't bat an eyelid!!!!

Even IF the cost is built-in to the goods, not having the service does not entitle that 'lady' to a tantrum her toddler would have been more suited to throw. This is basic disrespect of another human being and dignity of every type of labour. BTW the 'No?' thing in every second post is getting really old.

bad day or not, nothing excuses the fact that you go scream at a person who's completely not at fault, i.e. the packer. he didn't know there was an idiot in line who would have a meltdown just because she had to lift/pack a couple of bags a whole foot to her trolley herself. he was just out doing one of the thousand jobs on his list for that day.

Too old to have a toddler. Gosh why do you like some others need to be offensive and want to bully others ? [color=#000033'> Is that a rhetorical question?;)[/color'> edited by Sticky Wicket on 03/04/2011
