Seems to me that there are far better ways of flaunting one's higher moral standards than holding up the checkout. I did not read the posts of those who managed without a packers as flaunting ones higher moral standards. I read them as those who either preferred to pack themselves or see the packer as a bonus. I did not read the posts of those who use or even insist upon packers as flaunting their standards. I read them as those who believe it is part of the supermarket service they are paying for or those who appreciate the kindness and help. With the exception of the poster who thought we needed to consider the mental state or goings on in the day of a rude and agressive person (wtf?) most seem to agree that the behaviour of the shopper was over the top. I think most agree that following the OP into the car park because she did not back her point of view was not necessary. Using a packer or not doesn't define what kind of person you are but behaving like an ar$e does. That should have been perfectly obvious to everyone except those posters who need to prove their superior moral status (aka chippie class warriors). Which was my point. The woman in the OP's post was completely out of line. Barking or bad manners, who knows, but she was completely and totally out of order. However, packing one's own groceries however does not convey instant sainthood.

I may be "anally retentive" but prefer that to having bread or soft fruit squashed by heavy items, or eggs broken when thrown in the bag or food placed with cleaning products...all of which have happened to me when I haven't packed myself...anyway I like to think I don't hold up the queue...have a system where hubby places all the items on the conveyer belt (in the right order) and I wait at the other end with my cooler bags and other bags ready to pack! :) The packers always look at me like I'm mad though LOL! edited by sydneygal on 04/04/2011

I love having my groceries packed and if they are wheeled to my car and loaded in that is an even bigger treat. Have an hatred of doing it myself and if there is someone employed to help me I am thrilled. One of the pluses of Dubai for me. The only problem is that for each bagger who accompanies a person to his/her car, that is one customer who doesn't get a bagger!

I loved having packers.........and I imagine so do the store owners. Less queues at the checkout, faster throughput, happier shoppers and more profits. Why do so many posters on here equate this with some kind of exploitation? It is quite simply much, much more time and motion effective than having shoppers do the dance between loading the conveyer, and dashing to the other end to pack.........especially when it's an anally retentive "everything in the right bag" customer. Seems to me that there are far better ways of flaunting one's higher moral standards than holding up the checkout. Well said :) Ditto.

I shop in my local supermarket (Morrisons) and the staff are lovely. Very friendly, chatty and help with the packing as they check items through. It's the same in our other supermarkets whether Tesco, Asda or Sainsburys. As for our village coop, you could be there for hours chatting LOL! I think we come from different parts of the world... Sales people back home are nice in general and (which I miss here very much) usually know what they are selling and can advise on the products they sell (when buying appliances for example). But you'd better be quick packing your bags in the supermarket, which you either have to bring from home or, if you purchase their plastic bags, you better not expect the cashier to give them to you like here, you have to collect them before it is your turn to pay... But back to the original topic: After all those years living here I am still apalled at how rude some people are here and how they think that some people are lesser humans than they....And this rudeness knows no boundaries of nationality or cultural background, either. I was too while living in Doha. I used to watch in amazement as haughty women just stood there while their tiny maids struggled with these huge packs of chicken, boxes of dishes and cooking pots etc. On 1 occasion a maid dropped a box containing a plastic jug and was roundly slapped on the back and screamed at by her "madam" who was in Western dress so not sure of her nationality. The cashier actually told this banshee to keep her voice down!!!! I was at the next till and gave the poor maid a sympathetic smile while treating the harridan to one of my best Celtic glares!! I'm Scottish and live in a lovely community but people wouldn't last 2 minutes if they tried some of the antics I witnessed over there :)

Corkshelly - good for you for saying something...some people are just plain lazy and rude! I have to say I am completely OCD about packing my own bags - hate having things squashed or not packed EXACTLY how I like them! I'm always telling the packers that I don't need help thank you very much (nicely of course!) :P

I rarely ever have a bagger when I shop here. They are always busy doing something else! Like one poster said, it is annoying because I'd like to be able to see the scanned prices rather than bagging. I also watch the prices (like a hawk) as they go through (almost always something is scanned at a much higher price than advertised) so will stand by the till until all my purchases are though. If there is no packer, then once the transaction is done, I am happy start packing. I'm not going to risk giving extra money to the shop if I can help it! Ok, then it makes the line slower but don't care, if the shop doesn't want to employ a packer for every lane then so be it. I would much sooner watch my prices. If there is a packer, then are more than happy to use their assistance. I think its important to let them do their job; if we act like "no I'm fine, I'm not lazy" then you are actually showing that their job is not required and potentially a company could stop employing these people in general and they will lose their livelyhoods. I also never ever use self-check outs at home......always go to the counter with staff, again, yes they save time but are actually at the cost of peoples' jobs. I take a stand against that on principle, 100%.

The woman should not have been so rude but the shop is ultimatley at fault for not having enough packers. In Le marche the guys never go on the till they either pack or collect trolleys. I generally pack myself in Le Marche but when I'm doing a big monthly shop in C4 I ask for a packer as it would take a long time for me both to empty the trolley and pack. Actaully, it's good to have someone unpack so you can watch as the price is rung up - sometimes there are mistakes. There is one woman I've seen in Le Marche who gets one of the packers to walk around the shop with her carrying her basket and putting into it the items she points out. I was in a hurry the last time I saw this but next time I'm going to ask the manager if she is paying extra for that service!

ok i feel i need to clarify this.my op was to point out how rude and lazy this woman was...I have no prob with bag packers if they are there.....I know its their job etc.and part of their job description.I object to someone being so god damn lazy to put packed bags in their own trolley and then proceed to talk to people as if they are dirt!!!There is no excuse for it.It wasnt as if the guy was standing there having a cup of coffee or chatting he was doing something else which she rudely interrupted... I think the people who do the manual jobs here put up with a lot here and worse in their own countries but comeone they are working not claiming benefits as what goes on anywhere else.... Is great people tip I applaud it by all means but if u have have to do something yourself just do it get over it and enjoy your life!!!

Quote by Embro: I've seen a man in a khandoura slip the free face painter 50 dhs to paint his daughter's face, skipping the queue of children. Now I understand why the face painter took the money and allowed the girl to skip the queue but not so easy to explain to a 5 year old why sometimes people feel that having money means they don't need good manners. A combination of ignorance and greed (face painter) and arrogance (queue jumper) I'd say. edited by Crystil on 04/04/2011

What I find quite interesting with the packers here is when they see a local person, they will drop all your goods and run there to pack coz they get quite nice tips from them. and i have seen locals order the packer around, make them push the trolley to their vehicle, load the groceries into the back, take the trolley back to the trolley zone and click their fingers waiting for the dirham back from out of the trolley. have you ever seen the locals who give the packers a Dh50/100 tip without thinking about it? I bet that is not worth a mention on EW. Never seen it and doubt I ever will. Actually, packing is an EXTRA service we are lucky to get when it is available. When I first came to the UAE there were 3 packers per checkout, but over the years they are decreasing as they're probably trying to phase it out, as they are slowly but surely becoming more like other countries. Yes, I'm the first to admit, I like it when there's packer at my counter, and i might choose a checkout which has a packer, I don't take it for granted and if there's not a packer available, there's not a packer available. Its different if someone is standing around doing nothing, but another if they are busy doing something else... the person who encountered the OP sounds like she was being unreasonable, and whether it was due to her just being a rude Bleep or sick in the head is another topic altogether. CorkShelly, kudos to you for holding back some of the more nastier things you may have said/done! I have to agree! Every time I am back home, that first time I go shopping in the local supermarket there, I spend a few seconds waiting, assuming someone will pack my bags, until the cashier barks at me to hurry up so she can ring up the shopping of the next cusomer. Ahhh, home sweet home, where service is rude but honest ; ) Besides that ,I like packing my own bags in the supermarket because that way I know exactly where what is and I will not have the cleaning products (sometimes leaking) together with the bread or similar.
